If anyone worked a job for 25 years and was told they had to give up their pension they would be stupid not to quit/strike.

It is the principle. I would not work for a company that asked something like that - it is good they brought it down instead of taking a hit like that.

People will think the union fucked themselves over, but they really took the whole company down as a way of saying "fuck with us, we'll fuck with you".

Hostess had already claimed bankruptcy, TWICE. The only reason they were able to even resume production is because of an agreement they made with the workers regarding pensions/wages/etc. And then after the deal was made, 5000 of the workers got mad and said NO FUCK YOU GIVE US MORE.

Hostess basically said "Seriously guys, we can't actually even be a business if you do this shit. Seriously, if you do not go back to work by 5 PM, we literally have to shut down because we cannot support ourselves."

And the Union went SUCK MY DIIICK GIVE ME THE MOOOONEY, thinking they were calling Hostess on some kind of bluff.

And Hostess said "Fine, have it your way, faggots. LIQUIDATED."

The Teamsters were actually /against/ the bakers'/millers'/etc union decision to strike because they thought the bakers' union was unreasonable.
Hostess' new 5 year contract stipulated an 8% company wide cut in pay for the first year, but 3% pay raises the next three and a 1% increase the one remaining, leaving workers with an overall 1,5% increase at the end of that five years. Not much, I realise, and even below the rate of inflation, but the Teamsters were understanding because of the current state of US and world economies. Hostess had guaranteed no loss in pension and an attempt to guarantee bakers' union jobs.
The bakers' union, however, thought this an affront and demanded pay increases in an industry already oversaturated with workers and with barely enough money to keep operations at the status quo. For their hubris, the families of thousands of Hostess-employed bakers, unionised or no will now go wanting.
It's a sad day for these people; I can understand both sides, the union wanted increase in pay to offset the plummeting value of the US dollar and the company's need to keep itself and its employees abreast by cutting costs and spending, but the union started a war of attrition, guaranteeing both parties' mutually assured destruction.
My thoughts are with the families of the union workers and the union workers themselves as well, but this is what happens when desire overruns need.

I love how the right wing scumfuck executives that drove Hostess into the ground are trying to blame it on unions. As if ANY profitable company shuts down overnight because of a labor spat.

First off, here's a list of raises that took place during July of this year:
Brian Driscoll, CEO, around $750,000 to $2,550,000
Gary Wandschneider, EVP, $500,000 to $900,000
John Stewart, EVP, $400,000 to $700,000
David Loeser, EVP, $375,000 to $656,256
Kent Magill, EVP, $375,000 to $656,256
Richard Seban, EVP, $375,000 to $656,256
John Akeson, SVP, $300,000 to $480,000
Steven Birgfeld, SVP, $240,000 to $360,000
Martha Ross, SVP, $240,000 to $360,000
Rob Kissick, SVP, $182,000 to $273,008

Secondly, Hostess never intended on reopening its doors once it went into Chapter 11 in 2011. They were always going to liquidate. They just wanted to rape the unions on the way out.

Is that 1bn liquid assets? If not, it doesn't matter since it can't be easily used. A building you just bought is considered an asset, the machinery is considered an asset. Those things can't not be used to pay your wages. Well, it indirectly does but if they sell those off, you're out of a job which is what's happening here. Also, they just had a $300 million loss. I read the first 20 or so posts, so let me just clear the air and lay down the facts.

Hostess was having a hard coming from a slow economy and the unions driving up labor cost, so they were going in and out of bankruptcy restructure.

There was a dispute between the unions mainly because of pension reform and cost of employee healthcare funding. They were going to switch from a classic pension model to more of a 401k model, but were not going to touch the actual money in employee pensions, just not match them for their money anymore.

All of the unions, except for the 5000 member strong baker's union agreed. After more negotiation, it was hopefully settled. Defying a court order, the bakers still refused to go to work, despite even the teamsters agreeing to the concessions.

Because of those 5000 employees, the entire workforce of 18500 is now out of jobs right before Christmas. Now another food company will probably buy up the rights to produce things like twinkies and Ho-Hos, probably Little Debbie.

tl:dr dumbass union fucked everyone out of their jobs; the management, the bakers, the truck drivers, and everyone else

Guess they should have taken advantage of NAFTA regulations during their financial crisis in 2004, shut down their American operations and shipped in Twinkies and Ho-hos from Mexico, putting all their workers out of their jobs.
Why didn't they do that? Might be because they were trying to keep things in the US, at greater expense to the company and its consumers mind you, just so that Hostess workers and their families wouldn't be out on their butts with no income.
This is proper stewardship.

Why the fuck would a corporation try to take away pensions from loyal laborers? It seriously makes no sense.

Unless, it was to force a strike, use that strike as justification for firing all of your workers, and then get Uncle Sam to pick up the tab because they all have Grade A unemployment claims now.

If they're smart, they won't "allow" hostess to close it's doors, and it will undo the "firings", freeze the assets, and use them to pay out pensions. If upper management refuses to operate (lol irony) under these conditions, well, where the fuck is Altair when some rich entitled fucks need to pay?

However, firing all the workers and not just the bakers seems excessive.

They gave all their management raises, then laughed, threw up their hands and went "lol we don't have any money to pay your pensions anymore. We took that to pay our salaries!"

It's called mutual sacrifice, both parties must sacrifice to make sure the business succeeds. Except one party, the management were ALL too happy to fuck over the workers because they did not care about Hostess as a company, about it's workers, it's success, anything. They cared about milking Hostess for the money that was remaining, then cutting the slack and moving on.

I guarantee you the management isn't looking for a job. It's the 18,500 people they cut loose like they were just slave labor that was no longer useful to them anymore. The workers were fighting for principal and standing up as human beings.

Watching American TV shows as a kid (such as the wonder years) I often wondered if the national phobia of communism could be real. That's my point, sorry if it was a bit vague, I was phone posting while eating lunch.

It all comes down to Gross Vs. Net. Hostess has a higher Gross income than a smaller regional bakery, but the smaller regional bakery has a better Net. They don't sell as many units, but they keep more money from each sale.

Same thing with in-store brands like Wal Mart and Safeway, partly because they can piggy back distribution, and partly because they contract production to the aforementioned smaller bakeries.

Hostess has simply hit the point of diminishing returns, they've become too big and inefficient to remain competitive with the smaller, more flexible, more profitable producers. The dinosaur is starving to death while the birds and mammals are adapting.

And that's the way it needs to be. Despite all the political rhetoric, the big national and multinational corporations aren't the real job creators in America. The real job creators are the smaller, regional businesses (INC business magazine did a good piece on this last month, actually). Because they're more adaptable, have better net profitability, are more vertically integrated (that's an important phrase, look it up) and are less likely to outsource, they're the better bet for job creation.

We need to let the Hostess companies fail and let the Franz Bakeries of the business world take the wheel.
