/ck/ how come no Pubs, bars or grills in America (or at least the southeast USA) never have any cider or or dark beers? All they ever seem to have is Bud, Coors, etc. the Darkest thing I EVER see in an establishment here is Yeungling. you'd think maybe they would say "Hey, some people like dark beers, and some people also like cider sometimes."

It bugs me because I heard in Europe, both are commonplace in bars, pubs and restaurants. are there American establishments that carry dark beers or cider, or is it some kind of unwritten law that these places are only allowed to carry piss water?

The beer culture in America is vastly different than in Europe. Cider is starting to make a comeback though, I live in a shitty town in the south and the majority of the bars (that aren't dives) have started to sell Woodchuck and Angry Orchard.

I think you're just going to cheap bars, which will only sell cheap beers.

Don't reply to trolls.

Anyway, in regards to OP: Some cities just don't buy into the whole craft beer scene. I live in a boondocks city in south-central Kentucky and three of the stores I frequent have a collective craft beer selection larger than any I've seen in any single huge warehouse liquor store when I still was living out west.

All depends on where you are, I suppose.

I'm from Alabama and you can get plenty, just not at your average bar. But in every town I've lived in there's at least 1-2 places that have enormous microbrew selection, even my local Kroger. And Alabama is one of the shittiest states with their alcohol laws. Just in 2009 we had a law passed that finally allowed the sale of beer over 5% alc content. Most of your decent beers are just above that. In just 3 years the selection has broadened enormously.

One of the best draft beer selections in my current town of residence is a Mellow Mushroom. They have a HUGE selection, and also have some local beers on tap.

The best porter I ever had was from Pensacola Bay Brewing Co, which is about 40 mins from AL's state line.

I've not gotten into ciders, so I'm not sure of the selection. I do know that when I browse the drink lists, many places have at least 3-4 varieties, especially since fall began.

Woodchuck [dunno the quality of it] is in every bar around here.

Not where I'm from in AL. One dude I worked with for a brief period was so pleb about beer it was annoying. Although, he did homebrew, and made this delicious Maker's Mark vanilla stout that made my mouth orgasm. And a ginger ale during the summer.

I frequent a local brewery about 45 mins from the town I grew up in as a child, and they have nationally award-winning beers.

Yes, if you go to your average cheap bar or house party in most anywhere in the country, you will get very shitty beer. You don't even have to put that much effort into looking for a place that serves good beer, if you aren't lazy or completely anti social.

If you want dark, feel free to hit up some places here in Texas (particularly the Irish and German establishments.)
Avoid the cowboy spots... they're the "piss water" places.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of bars in the south are catering to people who are drinking to get drunk... not to have a culinary experience. Bud and Coors are cheap and require no real skill or money to pump out.
