The ending animation was scripted 3 years in advance, but he couldn't bloody well spend 3 years doing nothing with the comic, so he kept opening stupid plot threads that were just intended to be filler for us. He went too far with this, and instead of being able to neatly tie up those stupid threads to get them off the table for the ending, he had to messy retcon them.

Sollux was a joke character created to be the example of someone actually succeeding in extracting themselves from the narrative by sheer force of will (in a comic all about that concept, where the characters all fail). His arc was over after he ascended into the sky with a bitch on each arm.
Aradia got fucked by ending Act 5 not living alongside any of the four main Kids. Due to that she was basically a non-figure in the popular fanfics of the time that Hussie and his ghostwriters used to write Act 6.
