Is it just my impression, or do US grocery stores suck ass in international comparison? It's either inedible pigfeed like Walmart or prohibitively "natural" stuff, with rather little in-between.

I visited Europe and was amazed with the quality of their "middle class" stores, there's no equivalent to Carrefour or Mercadona in the US.

This isnt an overall US hate thread, I realise many things are more affordable here.

Inappropriately vague statement "many things are more affordable"

Why didn't you add "many things are not affordable, however" or something similar?

Yeah, most places in Europe prices and quality are better. Went to Portugal recently, on a trip to an average grocery store in a somewhat wealthy neighborhood we got fresh baked rolls, mozzarella, ham, salad, a lemon, diet cola, chips, and two bottles of wine for around $15. Here in CO, the wine alone would be almost $15, unless you get the absolute bottom tier stuff.

US beef is pumped full of synthetic hormones to make it larger, many of the compounds involved are banned in Europe and the UK.

Having said this, I don't think we are under the same food price increase as the USA or Canada. YES! food prices have risen but it's not something that we haven't seen before.

Portugal is a poor country with low taxes on wine I assume. In America anywhere you're paying for alcohol it's the taxes driving costs up which is extremely local.

Sporadic BSE is nothing special.
Both before and after the BSE hysteria there have always been single digit cases per year, in every country. tt's a simple case of statistics.
Unless it suddenly clusters there is no reason to report on it as if it was sth special.

Today I saw a black woman walk out of the store with unpaid items as the associates tried to tell her to stop. Of course she knew that they wouldn't physically stop her. Security guards with the ability to arrest people should be the norm for grocery stores these days. I'm sick of seeing these people get away with petty theft because they can.
