It's cooked in a square pan, the sauce is done sparingly in tasteful stripes so that it does not intrude upon the meltiness of the cheese

detroit style is more than that. traditional detroit style uses wisconsin brick cheese only and it's cubed instead of shredded. this is what allows the sauce and the cheese to melt together seamlessly rather than being layered one on top of the other. cheese must be consciously made to ring the outside of the dough against the pan so that it melts down the outside of the crust to give that beautiful and flavorful crunchy ring you see in the photo.
