I received the SevenCups Shifeng Long Jing. This was probably the most expensive tea I've purchased to date, and it is indeed a good tea. Compared to YunnanSourcing's Premium Longjing, I would say that this is more "fresh," i.e. more complex grassy and vegetal flavors. The toasty nuttiness I am used to in longjing is much more subtle. Honestly it's good but it's not *that* good, I'm glad I got a small sample of it though because it is definitely very green in taste, almost like shincha in some ways. The brew is pretty light as would be expected. It came in a nice gold-colored resealable mylar bag, they definitely want you to feel like you are getting your money's worth. I also picked up this year's Hou Kui which I will probably try tomorrow.

I’ve drunk raw puerh and now I feel super relaxed like I can’t move a muscle and I feel weak emotionally like I can’t smile or get scared. I’m too relaxed. But when I drink Japanese green tea like fukamushi I feel my head is a ballon and I feel my head is lightweight and more calm, but it’s not like raw puerh. Why does raw puerh make me feel like this I can’t drink it because of this, I can’t move from the coach and I become sooo lazy and emotionally numb.

I usually just lurk here but today, in my mid 20s, I finally had my first 'proper' cup of loose leaf tea from China with nothing added. Previously, despite the fact that I've been enjoying tea in one form or another for about a decade, I only had bagged and powdered before. This is a coffee country.
I used to only drink fruity bagged ones and fruity powder ones, first with sugar added but then without sugar later on, but in recent years I switched to bagged white and green teas and recently invested into a better kettle, teapot, cups and imported a bunch of tea.

It was great, I have drank a lot of bagged green tea before and some of them definitely tasted a lot like what I just had, but the taste was so much more intense than what you get from the bagged ones. The way I would describe the difference is that bagged tea is kinda like the ghost or distant memory of what I just drank today.

I hope I won't turn into a snob in the future.

For equipment, get a basket style infuser, the ball type infusers don't leave the tea much room to expand. They're cheap, but if you'd rather not, try brewing grandpa style. Just dump some leaves in a cup and add hot water, refilling when you finish, you should be able to resteep it a few times.

My notes on Viet Sun teas so far, and poorly lit photo of Lào Cai Black brewed leaves as someone here requested.

Lai Châu Deep Forest Green Spring 2024
Tastes like longjing a bit, somewhat nutty and roasted. Some honey notes and sweetness. Strong vegetal umami flavor. Mouthfeel coating and thick. A bit of fruity flavor on the aftertaste, like berries. Rich nutty aroma in the brew and wet leaves. Dry leaves smell great as well. Handles boiling water for short infusions without any bitterness, and only slight astringency.
Tiny bit of pleasant sourness comes out in later brews.
Brewed leaves are fairly small, and seem in great shape, no small fragments and many still attached to the others picked alongside them.
I like it quite a bit more than other green teas I've tried, I think the flavor is a lot more complex and rich than the typical delicate and light flavor I'm used to with green teas.

Giàng Pằng "1 Big Tree" Spring 2024
One whiff of the dry leaves and I'm immediately regretting not ordering more. Smells strongly of strawberry juice and sweet ripe fruits.
First rinse brings out some grassier more vegetal scents. Maybe a bit of yeasty/beer-y sort of bakery or brewery type of smell.
Flavor and aroma of the soup is reminding me of dried fruits, mainly apricot. No bitterness but a fair bit of astringency.
Seems to take on more sweetness in later infusions. Still getting rich dried apricot scent and moderate astringency.
Really enjoying this one, I'm disappointed it's already sold out.

Lào Cai Black Spring 2024
Leaves smell malty, chocolatey. Reminds me of YS black gold tea.
Soup has thin but coating mouthfeel and no astringency or bitterness. Hint of sourness, and rich chocolatey honey-like flavors.
Dark chocolate-like fruitiness in the aroma comes through much stronger on the second infusion.
Seems to become substantially sweeter in later infusions as well. Lasts quite a few infusions.
Very nice tea, regretting only buying a sample of this one as well.

I agree, definitely didn't get chicory or any bitterness at all with this one. Though I'm not sure I'd be able to detect a chicory flavor.
I'm wondering if it would be due to a higher leaf to water ratio. It looked like Viet Sun fill their gaiwans piled to the top and higher in the brewed leaves photos on their site.

so if you want to heavy metal maxx, boiling tons of cheap rough plantation material is the way to go. that's why the only real cases of heavy metal poisoning from tea are Tibetans drinking shittons of stupidly strong yak butter tea every day, made from the cheapo rough cut bricks like Xiaguan Tibetan Flame

Viet Sun Ha Giang Black Spring Tea 2024 first impressions

Brewed at 85C for 15s+15s. Once I reached a minute I bumped it up to 100C. Honey sweetness and minerality taste up front. Some chocolate notes in the background, but it was somewhat subtle (the '23 Lao Cai I had was much more obviously chocolate-y). Very fragrant. It kinda reminded me of an oriental beauty tea. Next time I might try boiling from the start to see if it'll have more impact.

it's similar to cannabis, basically there's lots of genetic diversity due to it being grown from seeds and not having been monopolized by some GMO corporation. I very rarely find myself reaching for that cake vs. either something more fully aged or something young/ 10ish years old with dryer storage.
The '08 7542 is still pretty not fully aged. It has a decent amount of bitterness and is still kinda rough around the edges I guess you could say. I much prefer the 2004 8582, it's more rounded out and imo pleasant to drink. But that's just me liking my aged puer to be aged.

I mean if you decide you get some flavors mixing you don't like it's not particularly difficult to "reset" a pot by cleaning it

Old well aged teas probably are not coming down much even in the best case. Their is just not enough of them to meet drinking demand. Maybe some of the super expensive collectible stuff will but I don't think most of us here are interested in $1000+ cakes even if were half off. The big question is what will happen with all the younger and semiaged "premium" tea. There very well could be a price correction in that segment. Recent Dayi stuff in particular seems to be dropping but that was always pretty clearly overvalued IMO.

>>20532765
>farmerleaf is probably releasing his teas soon too though so might wait a bit
I am worried about that as well. I may just hold off on a FL order until fall sales. Most of the time I buy his fall teas anyways. Been too long since I bought aged sheng.

>taiwan is wet storage right?
It tends to be moderate to wet somewhat like Guangdong storage. There is a wide range though. If you want wet Taiwanese storage this looks like it fits.

Are you in the US or elsewhere? For me in the US his shipping is pretty good. The minimum shipping is still like $7 but it scales up slowly. I think I can get 4 cakes shipped for $10 which is much better than most China based shops. LP also tends to have pretty fair prices on his budget offerings so hes not hiding the shipping cost in the price.

This plays a huge role. International vendor markup is common in all sorts of industries. Things tend to be cheaper in their primary market or region of manufacture.
>this weird psychology of thinking everything on Taobao are fakes is what drives the prices up on western vendors.
I don't think most people make it far enough to even seriously consider buying from Taobao. The hassle factor alone keeps it out of most peoples minds. And being screwed over on Taobao is at least somewhat a valid concern, I don't think they have as strong of customer protections as westerners are used to and as a foreigner who is not even supposed to be buying tea on there in the first place you may just be out of luck if something goes wrong. But the "fake puerh" fear is mostly overblown so long as you use a little common sense. Sneaky fakes are mostly not a thing outside of some Dayi stuff and some expensive aged tea. Most fakes are just cheap shou claiming to be very old or cheap sheng claiming to be from a famous location. Many vendors embellish how much gushu is in their tea or how "wild" the trees are but with this kind of dishonesty you will still tend to get a tea commensurate with what you paid so long as you shop around and don't pay over average market value.

What I want to see is more fancy single origin spring sheng cakes that don't cost $100+. I don't care as much about dayi prices. Dayi cakes are a market in and of themself because they are the most popular brand for speculative investing. One has to wonder if the reason the dayi prices climbed so high in the first places was because many of the buyers didn't actually drink the tea. I personally think in recent years it was a bad investment unless you got it at wholesale price. If you spent $200 on a new dayi 7542 cake there is not as much room for growth in value because you have already topping out the average buyers price bracket and if you want it to double or triple in price it will likely be harder to find buyers.

Not sure how it compares to other dayi cakes in taste but it seems like a fine semiaged factory cake. I need to get an aged 7542 to compare it with. They are probably similar.
Here are some lazy tasting notes:
Earthy with mineral notes, wet storage has transformed it, dark tea color, old barn wood and straw, something kinda cucumbery, subtle spicy incense notes, lightly tingly on the tongue, slightly sweet, moderated bitterness that grows more intense in later steeps, not “fully” aged yet, still has bite to it

Sure, they're quite similar but a bit different.
I think camphornaught is more like earthy/foresty trees vibe, with a touch of sweetness. LS is like a cleaner, fresh cut wood with a hint of smoke, like a firepit filled with fresh pine boards maybe. I don't get any smokiness from camphornaught at all, just a bit of damp and foresty trees.
If you like lumberslut you'd probably enjoy camphornaught as well if you don't mind a bit more earthiness and sweetness. They're both very balanced in my opinion, not too much smoke on LS or too much earthiness from the naught, but plenty for an interesting and pleasant flavor profile.

2005 ChangTai "Chen Hong Chang - Yi Wu - Ji Pin"
Took me a few tries to get a feel for this one. At first sourness of stonefruits and just a touch of astringency, then it settles down into mellow sweet taste. Has a bit more oomph in it than the lancang tuo, which I couldn't decide if I preferred, but really it's neutral. Texture is just a little thin but ok. I almost wish it had some smoke.

The story is
>Often times, when many boxes of puerh tea were stored the bottom cakes would get smashed. Back in the day, when puerh wasn’t worth so much, this tea was swept up and sold by the kilo in large jars. A friend of ours bought some way back when and offered us this tea at a great price.

I understand your skepticism but you have to look at the value of the tea on the market. YoT has full cakes that they bought from the factory and have been storing since then, they probably still have a copy of the invoice somewhere. The stuff from teahut is just tea crumbs in a jar with a story, no real value to collectors so it makes sense that they can't demand those kinds of prices.
I'm not saying im conviced its legitimately a 1980 7542 made by dayi, but if i bought some i would simply evaluate it based on the quality for its price and not worry so much about the story.
I don't think ive seen any complaints about the quality or authenticity of global tea hut teas. Mostly i just see people making fun of them for being weirdos in a nerdy cult.

>> No.20537044

It may really be 1990s and only be "7542 style" cakes but I would expect it to at least be old factory sheng which at the price is still not terrible. If it turns out not to be an old tea don't order from them again. I care more about the cup than the story and even they don't stress the story much. Mystery jars of broken up tea are always worth less than cakes or well provenanced samples. Tea shops used to break up cakes into chunks for easier resale before puerh cake collecting became so widespread and some of that tea is still floating around.

I agree with you, it very well could be great tea for the price and at the end of the day that's what really matters.
I just really don't like being lied to, and I feel like they're lying to me to try to convince me to give them money. The weird cult thing also adds to my distrust. That's enough for me personally to never buy anything from them.

I get that, I just think they should be honest and sell it as mystery tea. They could say "Late 80s sheng sold to us as X, we have no way of verifying this, but it's an excellent tea with some age on it whether or not it truly is X" instead of "This is that super famous tea you've heard about, we're giving you a great deal, we got it at an excellent price, trust us bro."
And again if your view is "Who cares if they're lying, if the tea is good that's all that matters" that's totally valid, but I care that they're lying. I can't stand bullshitters and I won't give them my business.

>I can't stand bullshitters and I won't give them my business.
I respect the sentiment but to me it really did not feel like they laid it on that hard. I just read it a saying that it is good quality factory style sheng with perhaps an optimistic age estimation. The 7542 name in this context is as much of a style descriptor as anything. If you said 1980s, medium sized leaves, factory style production, megnhai area sheng you are effectively implying a dayi 7542 or related recipe anyways.

I guess it raises the question how different recipes and grades of tea did CNNP even make back in the day? Its not like today where brands advertise all sorts of premium productions. I don't think the 7542 was a premium or limited product line back then. I'm not sure CNNP even had a concept of a premium product line back then. Puerh was a bulk agricultural product. The 7542 recipe itself is not special in it's contents, if anything it represents a sort of average big factory production. They just have reputation of being reasonably consistent in quality.

See if your local tea shops have Japanese green tea. Shincha (first harvest) teas are the best in my opinion and they have just come out and last limited time, so try to find that. Otherwise ask for sencha that's from newest harvest (most are still selling last year's). Freshness is king, and if the shop is selling loose leaf, it matters when the tea's original package was opened. The exact variety is up to taste and there are infinite number of them so it's hard to recommend anything. You can like a cheap one more, but expensive is more likely to be better.
The parameters that make biggest difference are (try at least one of each):
- steaming (asamushi = lightly steamed, fukamushi = heavily steamed)
- shading (kabusecha = shaded before harvest, gyokuro = shaded for longer time)
- more advanced: cultivar (can often be a blend from a specific location)
Brewing parameters are also important (temperature, time, leaf/water ratio). Beginners are more likely to make too diluted tea.

nice! I actually really like the smoky element in Lumber Slut. it reminds me of a vanilla scented candle sometimes
I enjoy Peak Vulture too. though I'm not too hyped for w2t's sheng, they do have some pretty cool inexpensive ripes. nice break from the usual Dayi flavor profile which I've gotten a bit bored with

Man fuck the age of disjointed information. I'm so sick of getting crumbs of information through tea discord, reddit, forums and blogs.
Why can't these autists make information more accessible instead of forcing me to make multiple accounts across various platforms.
Fuck I'm so mad.

I was sick of this in one of my main hobbies so I started collating a google doc with all the information in an easily-accessible format to share with others. Perhaps you could start one of your own?

This sort of stuff was always dispersed. Nobody is going to make an "ultimate defective guide to tea (TM)". What did you expect. The only really bad thing these days are social media sites like Discord and Facebook that make information unsearchable and unlikely to be archived.

Is there something specific you need help with? somebody here may know.

Look what I got from o-cha!
A little too small to have paid $50, but I'm sure the quality is there. Next time I'll be paying for the cheaper delivery, inconvenience that I have to sign delivery.
