Poorfag here craving hot dogs. I’ve never bought hot dogs in my life. What is the cheapest hot dog weenies I can buy that aren’t complete shit? I saw these are basically free but everyone online says they are horrible, is it true? Oscar Mayer is a dollar more per pack but is it worth it?

I grew up poor and all we could afford is bar s and they're perfectly fine. I prefer them over some of the more expensive ones. problem with bar s is they aren't bun length and your first and last bite will be mostly bread.

Grew up eating Bar S because that's what we could afford and they're ok for bottom of the barrel meat paste dogs that you could nuke in a microwave. Much later in grad school, I upgraded to Oscar Mayer with sliced white bread instead of buns to stretch my dollar. Now I'm a snob who only eats all-beef dogs but I never forgot my roots.

The Bar S brand is so bad... I'm not a picky eater by any means but I would never eat these on a bun. The texture is so fucked up. They might be palatable chopped up inside a chili or some other kind of slop based dish but on a bun these are terrible. I haven't tried all the brands but Oscar Meyer, Hebrew national, and any of the 100% beef dogs are good.

Those are the absolute cheapest I've seen but they are indeed nearly inedible. If I was starving to death I'd certainly eat them no problem but my dogs wouldn't even eat one and they'd eat their own shit. They are especially bad in the microwave. They might be good heavily seared in a pan or on the grill but they are revolting otherwise. Good luck on your hot dog quest.

At my poorest I wanted something nice, so I bought a can of Hormel beanless chili, a pack of Bar S dogs, and a loaf of local white bread (couldn't justify buns since it was the same price.) Made chili dogs and toasted the bread; it wasn't good, but it was satisfying.

Bar S hot dogs are fucking awful as well as all their other meat. As someone ITT pointed out, they dont just taste bad, they also have occasional chunks of bone/cartilage/god knows what in them. Look for a local hot dog company, there's gotta be one near you. I live in Rochester NY and we eat Zweigle's. Over in Buffalo they have Sahlens and in Syracuse there's Hoffman's. It seems like every city around here has a hot dog brand so I'm assuming that's the same across the country. If that's not true... Man I don't wanna think about living in a world where I'm forced to choose between Ballpark Frank's, Armour, and Bar fucking S.
