My mom and I would meet up after work for the live music and she'd have so much fun I'd have to end up driving her home. It was like something out of an old tv show. It was one of the only places I've ever felt welcome.

One time some old packers fan tried to fight me there because I had my Cardinals jersey on. The owner was working and gave me and my brothers permission to take him out back and beat the shit out of him but he was like 70 and I didn't want to an hero him so I told him I was okay and just tried to ignore the geezer the rest of the night. Another family in Cardinals jerseys ended up inviting me to sit with them.

I still talk to the owner. He manages a chain restaurant down the road and apparently the place that's there now (Lucky's) is doing so shitty they've already sold it. The good news is, it was to another one of the old regulars so maybe we'll see some of the old recipes come back. Thanks for reading my blog.

The bread was fresh baked so it was never an issue. If this was some bagged roll I'd be disgusted but they made their bread fresh every day. It was so crusty and tasty you could eat it plain. And this was the small size. The large was overflowing. I'd always get the small but I'd ask for it "hoagie style" so it had the veg, mayo, oil/vinegar, oregano, etc and would be full and cost the same. And they used good lettuce and fresh sliced tomatoes on them too. Not how some places stuff their cheap ass iceberg and tomato cube rejects and off brand bulk Italian dressing into a bun. I could get the small with fries and a drink for 8.95. A qp meal is up to what, $11?

the two things that can fuck up a sandwich are freshness issues and proportion issues. make sure your bread is FRESH and all other ingredients too.

now for the bread I buy, I cut it in half (not fully in half but enough to open it up like a hot dog bun) and I scoop out a good amount of the bread inside to make room for my fillins. It makes good breadcrumb scraps. You want some classic Italian meats of your choice. My go-tos are salami (mild is really good here because the saltiness on an Italian grindah can get out of hand quickly), hot salami, leg ham, and olive mortadella. Provalone or Colby cheese are supreme. A little bit of fresh lettuce, thinly sliced onion, tomato, pickles and hots. I sprinkle some Italian herbs over the top, drench it in olivölle, wrap it up nice and tight and let it rest in the fridge awhile to settle into its form.

And that's pretty much it. Make sure you have enough moisture in there to keep it palatable. Everyone hates dry sandwiches and they give up on them because they aren't enjoyable. Mayo, oil, vinegar, fresh veggies can all contribute to the moistcha.

That's what the real eggplant parm is. Americans, for some reason, conflated two Neapolitan dishes, cotolette di melanzane and parmigiana di melanzane into one awful plate of bullshit with an overly sweet and disgusting sauce. The real parmigiana is just lasagne but with thinly shaved sheets of eggplant, deepfried briefly, used as replacements for the pasta. Cotolette di melanzane is literally just "eggplant cutlets" and it's thicker slices of eggplant which are breaded and deepfried and often eaten in or as part of a sandwich.
The lack of intelligence it takes to take something grief to a nice crispy crunch and then smother it in a sauce so that it is no longer crispy is astounding. "Italian" Americans are even dumber than negroes. Stupid bunch of cunts.

It's true and really weird. Here's the thing: you have to go to specific locations. I'm including Acme in my definition of Safeway since they're both owned by Albertsons and Delaware has both stores overlapping in the same area.
Anyway, most of them have shit hoagies, you're right. But some have fanfuckingtastic ones. Why does it vary store to store? Not sure but best I can guess is some stores skimp on what lunchmeat they use. I once got a hoagie from a bad Safeway (an Acme, actually) and the ham was square. The store I usually get the sandwiches from used circular ham (and capybara or whatever and other meat) in their Italian hoagie and it's good.

Why is provolone disgusting on everything but an italian sandwich? It's like bland rubber on anything else but you put it on either a sliced italian meats or even a meatball sub and it's the only cheese you can use.

provolone is weird. I really like the Boar's Head stuff because it's nice and mild, but in my current c'untry of residence the only provolone I can find is some fantsy imported stuff that's absolutely pungent. It stinks and has a really overwhelming flavour. It is delicious on an Italian grindah still, but not much good any other way.
