It's a status thing, at least it was when I was in school. A friend of mine had an endless supply of chewing gums because his mother was off cigs. That became his thing, he was the guy who gave out chewing gums, the gum pimp. Similarly, if you were on the list of recipients that meant higher status

It's a good way to scrub food off your teeth after eating in lieu of brushing your teeth.
I've got some small pits in my molars from acid erosion which haven't worn completely down to the dentin yet, but food gets stuck in them. Even brushing them sometimes doesn't get the food out of the pits but like a minute of chewing gum does every time.
Chewing gum also stimulates saliva production which neutralizes acid, protecting your enamel.
