The processing plant that made those hams and other pork products was a giant, ugly rust brown and steel gray factory in an otherwise uninhabited plot of land down by some train tracks. It got demolished years ago, which is great because that part of the city always smelled like rendered hog skin. Funny tho, I think Dubuque brand meat products are still made and marketed but they come from like France now or something?

Ive been to Dubuque. I live rurally west of Des Moines. Went to school in Iowa City. I like the river towns. We go to Prairie du Chien in the fall. There is a great restaurant that is a supper club type place called Jones Black Angus. (Spergs need not talk about black anuses)

Happy to hear. A lot of the towns up and down the Mississippi got hit by Rust Belt decline, and became the butt of many easy jokes and insults. Raised in Dubuque to resent and hate the town but it’s better than it used to be, and I’ve been surprised to hear the compliments of visiting folks the past 3-4 years.

If you follow the River Road up north through Prairie Du Chien and beyond, it’s a fun drive. Long, twisty, windy two lane following the spine of the Mississippi all the way up, very pretty in fall.

I think it is because bratwurst doesn't have a strict definition and when sold in America really means "German style medium coarse sausage", usually with pork as the primary meat. I think Americans also associate fine ground sausages with hotdogs, and pepper spiced sausages with pepperoni which stops those from being too popular. So together my idea is that fine ground sausages won't be popular and any German medium ground sausage gets called a brat.
