You're going to get a soft baguette with pate, usually pork and/or chicken liver pate, pickled daikon, carrots, sometimes peppers, and your choice of grilled lemongrass meats or a combination of them, garnished with cilantro, sometimes also culantro, and usually a little nuoc cham in the sandwich or on the side to dip
Some places will make them with nuoc cham mayo, sriracha mayo, or no mayo at all
Some places will toast the bread, some don't, or it's toasted on request

Yes, but you can’t just refer to literally all sandwiches and ‘sandwich’. Sandwiches are named based off of the particular combination of ingredients which are inside it. Calling a cubano a cubano isn’t an attempt to ‘Caribbeanize’ sandwiches, nor is calling a Reuben a Reuben an attempt to jewify them. Each sandwich just needs its own name so you can tell them apart, for convenience.

It's not straight fish sauce it's mixed 1 part fish sauce with 5 parts liquid (water, coconut water, lime juice, whatever) and 1 part sugar, usually with garlic and chilis
But yeah the meat is basically off a noodle salad bowl, with bread, pate, and mayo instead of noodles
Conceptually they're similar but different enough to satisfy a completely different craving
Imagine if you ordered a reuben and someone gave you corned beef hash
The basics are the same, right? Corned beef, a cabbage product, a starch, but you'd still be pissed that you didn't get what you ordered

It's funny that they've become fashionable and over priced in a lot of places because out in the suburbs of my city where I grew up there's a large group of Vietnamese and as a result a bunch of Vietnamese bakeries and it's always been a common and cheap, delicious lunch and I've been eating them since I was a kid purely because they were the cheap and tasty, with a fashion tax thrown in I can see why you might not think they're all that special and I probably wouldn't be so fond of them otherwise they are just a sandwich as you say

John McCain said this in 2000 in reference to the Vietnamese
>"I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

This. The funny thing about it is that everyone getting triggered is having a much stronger reaction to a simple, cheap, and delicious sandwich because it has a name that is in a different language. Unsuprising that they do not realize the irony of their outrage.

It is not a "normal" sandwich or sub at all
they were a french colony, and therefore really know a proper crusty fresh baked french roll
the sandwich has a savory livery french pate layerr that goes in first. Are you making pate at home? Is it featured in any other Sub shop? Nope.

then, a quick marinated salad, fresh with lime and ripe chilies, lots of cilantro, and then a choice of fillings such as hot lemongrass grilled chicken. It's a flavor bomb of a marriage of textures and fresh herbs veggies.
