I fucking love seasonging cast iron I season my pan as many times a day as I can, I actually kinda feel weird about cooking in it now because it usually isn't going to leave the seasoning as nice and smooth as a few rounds of seasoning it will do. I just thought while I was about to post this, what if someone accuses mem me me of overseaoverseasoning and if they do then lol I googled it and they say overseasoning is when it gets sticky well I just pump up the heat until its not sticky duh theres no suh thing as overseasoning thats crazy

Nice seasoning, OP. I think you can tell a lot about someone by how their seasoning looks.

>Using flaxseed oil to season cast iron pans is a growing trend. Flaxseed oil has a very low smoke point—at just 225 degrees F—which means it's quick to polymerize into a layer of seasoning. But, it can be quite expensive and difficult to find. It also has a strong smell to it.
Sounds like the Reddit option desu (speaking as a hotsauce-swilling fedora'd sir).

Flakey seasoning is due to using too thick of a coat of oil. You want to wipe off basically all of the oil before seasoning it. The layer of oil each time you season it should be microscopic.

Seasoning is a meme, the pans come presaesoned, just cook in it. And dont cook acids in it.
But for science I foudn it was good the cook a whole package of bacon chopped up to make crispy bacon bits. It seasons the pan nicely, and then you have bacon bits to sprinkle on everything, and a small jar of lard to save to cook with later.
For the lurkers: Don't fall for the cast iron cult extremism. Just cook with it, then scrub with picrel, then keep it dry and oiled so it doesn't rust, the end. You don't have to clean it with enchanted chain mail and salt from the unicorn sea.
And it's normal for food to stick, just wait until it's done cooking and it'll "release".

jesus christ thats just a dirty pan. scrub it down with a stainless steel sponge and soap until the soap runs clear. "seasoning" should be a translucent glaze that seals the raw iron, preventing oxidation.

Chainmail leaves the seasoning in the divots of the cast iron, giving the new layer of seasoning more "grip". Steel wool can strip the pan completely. Salt absorbs oil and grime but is really only needed for gummy stuck on debris. The process is OLD and it works best.

Chainmail is stupid, it doesn't even work sometimes if the stuck-on debris is the wrong size/shape. And I still read people saying chainmail damaged their seasoning anyway. And why are you are going to waste salt when dish soap is cheaper. Gummy debris... just wash it off with soap and sponge.
Steel wool works great, just don't scrub hard. Over time cooking with the pan and scraping it with metal tools the pan becomes more and more smooth. new layers of seasoning on CI don't need grip, you make things more gay and complicated than they have to be. Then people come in these threads like "cast iron is so complicated and finicky!" Just fucking cook in it and after you wash it dry it. That's it. THATS IT.

>scrub
Don't, unless you've fucked up big time and there is a piece of charcoal stuck to the thing.
>>20184096
Sticking is non-binary property.
Fresh PTFE pan - pretty good, let's say it is 100% on the non-stick scale.
Used PTFE pan with scratches and idk what - eh maybe, 80% on the scale.
Cast iron, with good layer of filth- seasoning - 90%
Polished SS - 50%
Scratched SS - 25%

I'd say cast iron (and prob carbon steel, same shit to me) are the best out of this list, since filth and usage makes them better over time, while others get worse.

>New layers of seasoning don't need grip
Yes they do, otherwise they flake. Scrubbing with chain mail SHOULD flake off the seasoning on the high points, exposing the cast iron, requiring a new layer of seasoning. Scrubbing with the chain mail is only needed every other month or so, with typical household usage. Eventually, after years of use, the seasoning is really tough and doesn't come off with the chainmail as easily or as much. The oil molecules are all polymerized and bonded to the metal molecules. Weak seasoning has unpolymerized oil pockets that don't bond to the cast iron. It's not fancy magical bullshit, it's really simple chemistry. It's not possible to get the oil to completely bond with every surface molecule of cast iron. This is why you have to do very, very thin layers of oil when you season.

You want to use a good amount of oil spread out over a half dozen or more coats. VERY thin coats.

He's right that if you just slop it on it'll chip and flake off in large bits if/when damaged.
