For a clear distilled beverage it's not so bad. Certainly better than vodka which is just water and ethanol. The juniper berries give it a nice and distinctive taste.

Tom Collins or Gimlet. The Gimlet one of the classic cocktails, dating back to the 1880's or thereabouts, and like its descendant the Margarita is seriously top-tier summertime refreshment. It's gin, lime juice, and sugar, commonly made with 3 parts Gin and 1 part Rose's (sweetened lime juice).

maybe you need to find the Martini that you like. I like mine very dry and citrusy so I use Tanqueray #10 and less than 1:5 amount of vermouth. If that's not your thing try dirty Martini or some other gin that's not as juniper-forward. Also, you can substitute part of the gin for vodka to tone the flavor down a little.

Other than Martini or Negroni, try Bramble or Last Word.

As a shot? Yeah it isn't great. The pine flavor from the junipers does play really well with citrus and herbs. Cranberry and quinine (tonic) are flavors that just work well with the juniper.

For more straightforward gins, I usually do a gimlet or a G&T. For something slightly more sweet, I'll reach for a Gin Basil Smash with the simple syrup replaced with a half-amount of elderflower liqueur (like St. Germain).

Really, gin plays well with an astounding number of flavors. Without getting too froufrou, you can just add gin to any or some combination of the below
>muddled basil, mint, and/or cucumber
>berries
>lime/lemon
>simple syrup or floral liqueur, to taste
>soda water or tonic
