The middle is typical spinach some in most of America. Left is baby spinach. Right is mature spinach. It tastes like spinachy spinach. Because that's what I grew up eating, the standard spinach here tastes bland and weak to me in comparison, like how baby spinach is weaker-tasting compared to the standard ones here.

Maybe she lives in the sort of area I do. Mine is majority Asian so Acme/Safeway, ShopRite and others carry a large number of Asian goods. Problem is, though, it's almost all prepackaged junk rather than produce, which is my main reason for going to the Asian supermarkets. There are four full service ones within a 10 minute drive of me and numerous smaller markets catering to single ethnicities, like the Cambodian ones, the Thai one, the Nepalese one and so on. There's even a little Mongolian store, but I've never been inside.
My problem is getting central, south and west Asian stuff. No supermarkets for those things nearby so I have to drive a bit. Not too far, just a half hour up the highway but all those east and southeast Asian supermarkets and smaller shops are within walking distance.

In my area, Jane Jane IS the $5/3pks brand (or $2 each) for most varieties. Some, like the lobster balls, fish tofu and the Fuzhou fishballs cost up to $3 (the deal is a buck off every three packs so the most expensive Jane Jane is around here is $2.66/pk).

Try this if you can find it. Simple but good

>> No.20099348

Snow Pea Tips go hard

>> No.20099398

The biggest mistake you can make is "just buying shit" at these places, especially foods you perceive to be "staples," or think you'll use someday.

First, you should start with a recipe that you want to make. Try something that you've had before, so you can easily tell if you went wrong with the seasoning. For example, Pad Thai. Look up all the ingredients for Pad Thai, watch a video of someone putting them together, see if you have all the tools for it (many Asian grocery stores also sell cookware and utensils), and go from there. Buy enough to make the dish multiple times, since you'll probably do a better job the second and third times.

After that, pick another thing to make, and shop for the ingredients to make it. Stop buying stuff on impulse. Just buy what you will be using. That way, whenever you do figure out a food to make with a given ingredient, it won't be almost expired.

Since I cook a lot of Japanese food, I always make sure I have a good supply of the following, picked out in brands that I like--
>soy sauce
>mirin
>sake
>bonito flakes
>kombu
>nori
>shichimi togarashi
>beni shoga
>Asian rice
>fresh ginger
>miso
>furikake
>thinly sliced beef belly
>daikon radish

And a lot of additional stuff that I get from a normal grocery store--
>shallot
>yellow onion
>green onion
>garlic
>white pepper
>chicken thighs

That's mostly just for the long lasting stuff. The rest is what you can get cheap by season or when you need it for cooking. A ton of vegetables tend to be cheaper in asian grocers and/or better value as does some of the meat from the butcher section if they have one.
