I worked at Subwhey in 1998. It was a simpler time, with fewer fantsy pance sandwiches, ingredients, and menu items in general.

It was a small town shop with lots of regulars, the place was well managed and clean. I got really fucking good at washing dishes (all the cambros, knives, pans, etc were washed by hand), and there was a really strict schedule of food prep.

When you get slammed up at the front it could get a little stressful keeping up on food prep and baking, but for the most part it was staffed properly and not very hard. It's not a bad job, no ovens or stoves to worry about, no actual server/waiting bullshit. Just making sammos. But it's a skill and you gotta get good, people don't tolerate mistakes and sloppy sandwiches hurt the business. Plus you can't be wasting tons of food by making a mess.

Overall, much better than the first jobs my siblings had. My sister worked at a 5-star restaurant and was absolutely abused and then went to a hot dog place which she liked but stunk of BBQ sauce and hot dogs every day. My brother worked in a Hospital kitchen and it sounded like an absolute hellhole. You could do a lot worse than Subway. Just remember that you don't move up in the world by phoning it in; if you're gonna do a job do it well, you'll be a lot happier every day if you have a good attitude toward work and make everyone happy.

Yeah no shit lmao. Your attitude is 30 fucking years old too. Nobody gives a shit about these crap ass jobs and working hard will NEVER move you up.

what a post, thanks anon. the subway i'll be at is so horrifically understaffed that they are shuttered on the weekends and have up to 3 hour disparities on either end of their posted times during the week, so... we'll see how that goes

Well it doesn't have to move you up in the world per se, but it does help when you try to have a good day rather than a "I hate everything" day. Suit yourself though by all means.

It was a hell of a lot easier to have a good day in 1998, old man.

rural, city, or suburb? at least it's a good sign they don't try to stay open when they don't have staff to run the place and keep it prepped.

I still live in the same world anon. A good work ethic still pays off. You'll spend about 55 years of your life working, and most likely for somebody else and at their leisure. Better get used to making the best of it.

rural; it's in a strip mall set up and also right next to a food lion (with their own sub sandwich section in the bread area i believe, funnily enough) - but the whole area is sleepy as fuck and even though it has an incorporated name i don't think there's a residence within 5 miles of the whole place. i have a hard time seeing it ever getting crazy busy unless i become the lord of subway or something and people start showing up again just to get a decent sandwich

No need for that. We'll be playing for blood soon enough.

Sounds like a good deal overall. You'll probably have no shortage of hours to grab and unless the owner is an absolute psycho it should be pretty low pressure.

Best of luck anon, come back and post about it someday. Like all new jobs you won't be too impressed the first few weeks but once you're on top of everything it's pretty cruisy.

thanks anon that's what i'm hoping over, gotta see if they'll stick me in there full time

i've worked at both subway and jj's. what makes or breaks any job is the staff. if your co-workers suck at their jobs, regularly don't show up, or the business is just consistently cycling new employees in and out: quit. they'll end up constantly dumping their share of the work on you and you don't get paid more for it.

never accept any offer for management in a fast food restaurant. at jjs i was the manager and it was pure hell. especially if there's an age gap. you have nothing in common with zoomies and they are all stupid as hell.

I am from the same era, and every time someone gets in a discussion with a shades-of-black zoomer that I can read as a 3rd party I am thankful that I was born at the time I was. I could not imagine waking up every single day knowing that I was going to spend the day either depressed or angry at everything.

sounds about as goldilocks as a fast good gig is gonna get. One of the other anons mentioned regulars being a large part of the business, and going off your description, I bet you have your fair share of them. It's apples to oranges, but I was a bartender during some of my 20's and knowing what someone was going to order, and roughly how long they'd be there was something of a comfort zone for me.

Sandwich artist (kek) was my first job back in high school. It was pretty shit for the pay at the time, got paid 7.60ish/hr. I was 16 and was left to run the whole store at times since we were short staffed, but I also slacked off plenty in the dead hours and ate plenty of food.
Overall it's a shit gig but fine for a teenager's first job. I felt bad for my 30+ year old coworkers who looked depressed, motivated me to never end up like that

all the subways here are owned by indians. and they only hire indians.. and a few mexicans.
Indians make the worse fucking sandwiches. they have this "thats enough" mentality because they all were dirt poor and think they are saving the owners (their family) money by giving you a stripped down weak ass sandwich. One time during lunch my work mate went to subway and i went to jersey mikes a few doors down. came back in to eat w work mate in the subway and people were noticing the jersey mikes sandwich on my table. like 3 construction guys saw it and then left to get sandwiches there. same prices and a much better sandwich. fuck subway. I havent eaten there since 2010

I worked there for a couple months in probably 2011. It sucked, mainly because at night I was the only one there and it was in downtown area, lots of nigs being nigs, and just a shitty experience. Wouldn't recommend. Jersey Mike's seems like a ok place to work though comparatively from what I've noticed

I got a sub a couple months back from a subway where an Indian was working (was in a rush and every decent food place had lines) he was such a fucking moron, squashed the bread trying to cut it, put like 5 fucking meatballs in it cause they ran out and tried to cover up the shortage of meatballs by putting retarded amounts of sauce on it, gave me the wrong change and kept his gloves on while giving me my change so sauce got in the notes, if I wasn't in a rush to eat I would have just walked out and gone somewhere else, Indians are the fucking worst
