>> No.19964494

I have a really hard time understanding how this could have cost them "millions". Zoomers love the idea that they're only getting their money's worth when they go to an AYCE buffet and strategize eating only all the most expensive proteins, but in reality most people don't do that, and the heavy eaters will often bring in other people who absolutely aren't eating their money's worth. A few people gaming the system is built into the price. I looked up this deal and it actually did seem kind of dumb to offer endless shrimp for only $5 more than 3 portions or whatever the deal was, but they were likely making a similar calculation. Like, "everyone is going to pay an extra $5 for potentially endless shrimp, but most people are maybe going to order one more dish, which makes it more expensive than going from 2 to 3 plates." If anything, this >>19964423
>reduce table turnover
is the bigger reason it cost them money. But then again, the kind of people who actually go to Red Lobster either think of it as their "fancy" night out twice a year and will linger anyways, or got some kind of gift card or are taking advantage of some other promotion. I still don't understand how they could have lost millions - unless that's just based on the projected numbers vs the reality of an already failing chain, kind of like Metallica claiming they lost money because of Napster. In any case, you'd have to be pretty stupid to invest in a franchise literally named after a product that in any reputable establishment will be listed on the menu as "MP".

Same. I never eat there. After looking at their menu it made much more sense. I don’t recall seeing a single entree that cost $20. They should have priced the shrimp deal at $40. It would have been less than many of their entrees so their REGULAR customers would have partaken of the deal. A $20 unlimited shrimp deal will pull foot traffic but they’re not going to come back later and drop $60 on a meal with drink and tip. They pulled into their restaurant people of average to low income who were going to eat until they burst to “get the best value.” This means customers tying up tables with cheap orders and for much longer periods of time. They’re eating more food, dirtying up more dishes, drinking more refills, need more service than others, and likely tip poorly. So in addition to the cost of the food there’s a lot more labor involved plus slower table turnover. Speaking as a regular to a local Italian restaurant if I went there and it was crowded, loud, and I had to wait to be seated, all because they were running some kind of crazy $5 unlimited pasta” deal I’d go somewhere else.

when i was a child, red lobster was basically the practice restraunt for the middle class. You took your children there to experience a slightly higher food culture than your typical family restraunt so they could practice ordering, manners, ect. The 'regular' dinners were older people who just want a nice, calm environment.

i imagine its nothing like that now. I would assume the shifting demographic composed of people who want to mimic middle class white behavior but dont have the self control to actually do it is the real reason for their decline. That, and the rising cost of sea food due to our greatest allies selling the technology to the chinese that makes over fishing possible. There was once a time when sea food was dirt cheap, primarily because it was so plentiful and only a handful of countries were actively procuring it. Now, that isnt so. But you cant tell the board that. Thats politically incorrect. Yeah.. it was those damn shrimp deals.

I’m Gen X. I well remember fish being cheap. I ate a lot of that as a kid, being “poor.” I had no idea how rich I really was. Today’s world is very different. A lot of middle class luxuries are either outside of peoples’ budgets or have been forever altered due to our shifting culture we’re not allowed to speak about.

I go through old cookbooks and some recipes make me both want to laugh and cry. Things like caviar pie. Caviar pie used to be one of those kinda’ trashy chic hor d’oeuvres made from inexpensive red and black caviar you could find in supermarkets. My local grocery stores simply stopped carrying it after the little jars hit $10. Or all of those lobster recipes in those books. Remember when supermarkets had live lobster tanks? Yeah, we don’t have those anymore. Mouth-watering recipes like trout almandine- I never see trout anymore and when I do it’s like $20 a pound.

But, back to lobster and those missing lobster tanks in common grocery stores. All I see now are pre-prepared lobster tails sealed in plastic packages. Red Lobster, as you accurately described it, was a kind of budget-friendly “fancy” restaurant during a time when lobster was priced a bit above fish but still very affordable. What made it so special was the effort and skill it took to prepare a meal with it. Today I’m honestly surprised the chain is still alive with how actually expensive lobster is now.

I know these kinds of economic discussions could appear to skate the line of being off topic but food availability is core to cooking. I have so many recipes I want to try, but can’t, because the ingredients are either no longer easily available or priced beyond my reach. Just once I’d like to try my skills at preparing leg of lamb, or roast a goose.

They used investment money from the bank (your money) to dump a bunch of cash into advertisment and not only did they work for free at a loss but they covered the costs of the discounts in the app
Now traditional delivery doesn't exist, food costs 30% more if ordered from the app and if you go eat there they serve you crap because they don't actually want costumers to eat there
They took your money and gambled with it then used more of your money to make your life worse
I repeat this was your money they never risked their money, the bank never asked you permission to use your money for this and if the bank screws up with your money you could loose everything meanwhile the government will absorve the debt of the bank and pay for it with taxes and inflation you pay for while keeping said bank as a private institution even tho eating that debt should have meant buying the bank
And then the bank goes back to doing the exact same thing, take your money and split it like a pirate splits booty and if you want to start your own delivery service you can't because you won't get a loan and you won't get your app on the store
And if you want to start a bank you also can't because what a bank does is legally considered a scam were you keep getting people to "invest" money but value is never created you just keep getting more and more "investment" money and "loan" money from businesses that constantly go bankrupt and somehow also makes you profit and dirt poor people stuck on a 20 year payment plant, it just works

Uhhh yesterday and literally every other day I go to work. The Co-op in the UK gives you small discounts around the shop on certain items if you have a membership card, but those discounts are still applied to reduced items. So staff get all the good shit for almost nothing, then get staff discount, then it applies the membership discount as all staff cards are also membership cards. Combine it with the weekly offers they give you in their app and you can occasionally do silly things. Baguettes baked that morning for 3p, sandwich, fruit, and can of Relentless for 80p. Packs of chicken breasts for 80p. Shit like that. I'm not in work today but I did today's first reduction yesterday and know that there's 3 joints of beef that'll end up pretty cheap on top of a whole other mountain of meat. Might go in later.

Yeah, it's actually really bizarre to think about. It's like they kind of just stopped being a thing overnight. I do remember one of the grocery stores I was going to in probably 2005 always having no lobsters in the lobster tank, but don't really remember when exactly that happened. It used to be in every grocery store and now it's basically non-existent. At least the Asian grocery stores still have tanks with live seafood. I don't trust it enough to eat it, but the overcrowded tanks do make for good entertainment.

I've only been to Red Lobster once, probably 15 years ago, because we got a gift card from somewhere, and I couldn't believe that most of the entrees were in the $20 range. For the quality it was mind-blowing, and yet the place was packed. We ordered a bottle of wine and I had to show the waitress how to use a corkscrew because apparently people don't order wine at Red Lobster. I wouldn't be surprised at all if prices today are nearing $40. I think it's the same people who shop at Walmart who eat at Red Lobster. Unless you go there on a strict budget and order things you probably don’t really want (don’t most people want lobster when they go there?) it ain’t no longer cheap. I was pretty shocked, too. Plain Friends are more Amish like. The vast majority of Quakers are pretty modern. I live in a city, drive a car, use technology, wear clothes with buttons etc etc etc. Also, there's no real "allowed" or "not allowed." The point of most forms of Quakerism is to develop a personal relationship with the Unknowable. Outside of that, there's no creed, which means no list of rules once must follow to be involved in the RSF. Many of us even avoid using terms like 'God' and quite a few of us wouldn't even identify as Christians. I'm >>19966508 and I'm a nontheist Friend/Quaker Humanist.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if most Friends live according to SPICES, an acronym kids are taught at First Day School or at Quaker schools. It stands for the 'testimonies' of Quakerism IE simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship.

>sonic was selling burgers 5 for $2, i'd eat 1-2 and fridge the rest
I got that $5 for 8 pieces of fried chicken from Popeyes deal (the one from the notorious video of the the Black people being upset that it was sold out) every year they offered it and are a piece or two and froze the rest. The last few years they still did it, they put a cap on how many orders, limiting it to two per customer.
