19958860 No.19958860 [Reply] [Original]

McDonald's is making significant changes to its burger offerings in the U.S., implementing over 50 tweaks to its core menu, including its iconic Big Mac. The goal is to enhance the quality of their burgers and compete with higher-end, fast-casual burger chains like Five Guys. The changes involve cooking all-beef patties in smaller batches for a more uniform sear, increasing the amount of special sauce, rethinking lettuce, cheese, and pickles for freshness and meltiness, and introducing a buttery brioche bun with randomly scattered sesame seeds.

The move comes as the burger market faces increased competition, and McDonald's seeks to improve its burgers that have long been criticized for being dry and lacking in flavor. The company is reviving practices it had abandoned for efficiency, acknowledging that quick, fast, and safe preparation doesn't necessarily result in great taste. With a surge in sales during the Covid-19 pandemic, McDonald's is aiming to maintain its momentum amid economic uncertainties.

The revamped burgers have already been tested in Australia, where McDonald's achieved an all-time high in burger market share. The changes are now rolling out in the U.S., starting on the West Coast and Midwestern stores, with plans to cover all U.S. locations by early 2024.

The burger market is crucial for fast-food chains, with burgers accounting for around 40% of U.S. fast-food sales. McDonald's faces competition not only from traditional rivals like Burger King and Wendy's but also from fast-casual chains like Five Guys, Shake Shack, and Smashburger, which have popularized techniques like the smash-burger method.
https://www.wsj.com/business/hospitality/mcdonalds-burger-new-menu-2400d22b

>> No.19958861

This initiative is part of McDonald's broader effort to improve its burger quality, recognizing that customer perceptions have indicated a preference for burgers from other chains. It involves retraining workers, ensuring global compliance with new specifications for buns, and addressing challenges such as inconsistent cooking on grills. Despite potential concerns from franchise owners about the cost and implementation of the initiative, McDonald's is optimistic about the positive impact on burger taste perception.

Burger King, another major player in the U.S. burger market, is also investing in burger improvements, examining broilers and incentivizing franchisees to replace equipment that affects taste and quality. Both McDonald's and Burger King are scrutinizing every component of their burgers for possible enhancements.

In summary, McDonald's is undergoing its most significant burger menu upgrades in decades, aiming to provide a better-tasting product and stay competitive in a changing fast-food landscape.

Their biggest problem currently (besides prices) is that the Deluxe version of their burgers suck because the hot patty - particularly the DQP - literally cook the lettuce and tomato. This was something they tried to fix with the McDLT in the 80's and get flak for the extra packaging.

>>19959035
>We want shittier, CHEAPER burgers
Not gonna happen. Never getting cheaper. That only happens with commodity prices. As you go up the value-add chain, the prices almost never go back down again. Thanks Biden.

What's worse is that fast food is likely going to get the cigarettes treatment soon because we actually let governments get away with what they did. They're going to destroy fast food by making it even more ridiculously expensive or literally swap out the animal protein for bugs and plants in order to get a "pass" from the govt.

Fast forward to the current year: they removed the supersize menu, printed the calories clearly on the menus, and nobody even talks about obesity anymore, and now they're bitching about McDonald's being too expensive. Like, I'm not going to deny that the economy isn't fucked up, but let's not act like McDonald's customers were ever savvy consumers.

The Biden team is very upset about the viral dangerous misinformation about McDonald’s being expensive proliferating TikTok. It is now working with both TikTok and influencers to set the story straight about the price of McDonald’s Big Macs.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/11/24/bigmac-price-tiktok-biden-economy-inflation/

>Some economists think these kinds of comments are not just wrong but dangerous. They have been astounded by polling data on Biden’s economic approval and surveys of consumer sentiment, where results during the Biden administration are similar to the Great Recession, when unemployment was close to three times as high as it is now. These economists fear that these exaggerated stories will ultimately lead to a worse outcome — perhaps helping Trump win reelection — and that it is vital to make clear that this remains by many measures one of the best recoveries in modern U.S. history. They also express confusion over why consumers continue to spend so heavily, if the pessimism is driven by economic insecurity.
>These stories soon reached the White House Office of Digital Strategy, which tracked the meme as one of many exaggerated examples of the nation’s economic woes, according to a White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to reflect internal discussions. In reality, inflation has been steadily subsiding, and last week the government reported price hikes had eased yet again in October. The average Big Mac nationally as of this summer cost $14.58, up from $8.89 — or roughly $6.50 — before Biden took office, according to an index maintained by the Economist. That’s up more than 70 percent, but it’s not $16.
>The White House official said the administration is working with TikTok creators to tell positive stories of Biden’s economic stewardship, while also working with social media platforms to counter misinformation.

Its very telling though; portions get smaller, corners get cut, corporate gets a shitload of complaints and blames it on the staff cooking it wrong, then they change up the recipe or something stupid to generate a little buzz and the cycle repeats. I had to look up what the fuck was going on with this CosMcs. thats their trial run store where they want small-format restaurants for "digital delivery" and drive thru only. Basically eliminating the dining room.
Why?
Because then McDonalds corporate can buy smaller parcels of land, build a slightly smaller building, and remain competitive as real estate leasing to franchises is how the company makes the most money. Smaller parcels of land were off-limits to McDs before because they simply couldn't put the restaurant and parking on too-small pieces of land.

Holy shit. So instead of making good food, making it cheaper, increasing value, maybe having a building design that doesn't resemble something an autistic german designed, their plan is to make it ugly and smaller so "teens" or "urbanites" or "scholarship recipients" don't loiter inside the building.

Get rid of soda fountains because poors would refill too many times. Shitty burger is shitty so La'Quand'nish-a can't chimp out without a lobby. No homeless can fall asleep in a booth from 1am to 6am anymore. Either this will be a fantastic flop or it'll re-structure how fast food restaurants look forever.

I think McDonalds is seeing the future here. They stopped branding themselves as a “family” restaurant years ago. A dining room is a liability and additional expense when you’re no longer looking to have families sitting down. They can focus on the “fast” now. With apps like Doordash they don’t even need to build a delivery model. Just have a drive thru. Maybe a small lobby filled with lockers for pick-up where you key in a confirmation code to pop the lock. One person at the window taking orders, one person in the back to ring for help if a locker has problems, people and machines in the back cooking. No dining area, soda machines, no seats, no bathrooms. McDonalds will be first to do it and others will follow. Like you said, can’t have brawls or flash mobs if there is no dining room. This is our future. Pretty sad.

This is insane. Pic rel doesn’t even go into details about support staff. So one reason why we’re all too poor to buy $16 McDonalds is because our government pays an army of people to tell TikTok influencers to stop talking about $16 McDonalds and instead say nice things about Biden. Unreal.

I don't have a WSJ subscription because I'm not a faggot and I dont know every data point they wouldve listed

However

There's just subtle changes:
Cooking less more often
Adding onions on the burger itself while on the grill to caramelize slightly rather than adding onions to the sandwich
(no onion obviously available too, most stores will be cooking those to order)
For the condiments, the cambros were changed to hold less at a time which, for example

Lettuce can be out for a total of 2 hours before it is wasted, but the target is 30 minutes at most. So essentially keeping those things as fresh as possible without being an inconvenience. I will mention that exceeding the 30 minutes is still OK, but it's just an ideal target.

Cheese will be prepped differently, and tempered and ideally tempered for1 hour before use, which allows the sandwich to stay hotter, cheese to melt and room temp cheese also has better flavor

There's no new options to also answer your former equiry.

As for salads, I know they are testing pre made salads in some markets. I dont know what the reception was on that but I can look on the McD intranet.

As for snack wraps, if you ask nicely your local mcdonalds might allow you to get something similar, it'll just be the tortilla, lettuce, crispy chicken cut in half (or a whole piece cut, some come pretty small that are not suitable for sandwiches) and the sauce you'll probably just have to get as a packet on the side.
Like I said, may or may not let you but its always worth a try.

On social media, there is a large calling for snack wraps to return so I'm sure it will in the future but as far as my knowledge goes, it's not for sure planned.

funny how they never say how high that pay is
>B-BUT YOU GET LE DISCOUNTED GOYSLOP!!!

Working at fast food is the biggest fucking scam ever, they work you like a dog and the pay is absolute shit, and there are basically zero advanced opportunities beyond shift lead for a tiny pay raise and twice as much work. Pretty much anything else you can do is better.

the prices are already way too fucking high. they need to do this and KEEP them the fucking same - it already costs as much to eat there as 5guys or even some restaurants. what the hell is the value proposition of a fast food joint anymore? drive-thrus? that's it?

for real. the last year or so, i've been to various fast food places. jack in the box, mcdonalds, burger king. every time, i leave looking at the food i got for the price i paid and go, wait, i could have picked up a real fucking hamburger and fries from my local joint for the same price and it would be 50x better. why the fuck will i ever go here again?
and.. so far, i don't. not fucking worth it. the whole purpose of fast food was that it was where you go when you have 3 bucks wadded up in your jeans pocket and you could get a burger and fry without having to leave your car. but yet the last time i went through, my local mcdonalds had the audacity to hand me a fucking tip tablet lmaaao fuck you, i'll come back when you bring back an actual dollar menu and your burgers don't start at $10, until then get fucked

I'm cautiously optimistic. Remember the chicken sandwich wars? Every fast food chain increased the quality of their fried chicken sandwich to the point where you can get a decent one almost anywhere now. It would be nice to see the same thing happen to burgers.

Honesty, McDonald's Quarter Pounders are already pretty solid, imo. Sure, they don't compare to a non-fast food burger but by fast food standards they're above average. It would be nice to see McDonald's raise their other burgers to the same level of quality.

Their patties are already all-beef. They're just reiterating that to dispel the age old mystery meat rumors that won't die. I'm not sure why people act as if McDonald's food is some mystery where no one knows what's in it. You can look up the ingredients list on their website quite easily. It's not great but it's also not as bad as people assume. Yeah, it's unhealthy but that's less because of "chemikillz" and more because burgers, fries, and chicken nuggets are unhealthy in general.

I would welcome the delivery/drive thru only model if it meant lower menu prices. We know it doesn't; they're going to keep all the money for themselves and raise prices again just for good measure until it finally results in decreased business. Apparently doubling their prices has worked out for them but I know I've stopped going.

I would eat at McDicks again if they made it so you could watch the wagie live on the app through security cameras make your food. That would get those worthless dregs hot under the collar. Even better if you could taunt them with text to speech commands coming out of a speaker next to their work station "I SAW THAT WAGIE, MAKE IT AGAIN"

Thats why you toast it in the pan to give a little caramelization, and it soaks up burger juices. The only buns I've ever had "fall apart" were the cheapest possible shitbuns. Every other bun has held up well. Theres a reason chicken and fish sandwiches use brioche too; and its not because beef burgs tear up buns for no reason.
