not wrong. they don't add much as they're usually lower quality tomatoes, can mess with pizza cohesion as the slices are usually bigger than any other toppings, don't taste great just by themselves unlike a lot of other toppings and don't look appetizing after being blasted at high heat. when they do work it's only on a pure veggie pie

I'd say it's more like pineapple is the meme topping. Anchovies being a joke kind of predates the idea of something being a meme, and is more of a looney toons era thing, like limburger being the ultimate smelly cheese. Pineapple is a meme because people make a much bigger deal out of it being weird or gross than it actually is. In reality, Hawaiian pizza is probably the safest choice for a pizza party after plain cheese and pepperoni, as those are the ones nobody is going to complain about - as boring as they may be.
