I spent 9 months in various Indian gutters and back waters, places there was no reason anyone would go other than to confirm that nothing was there. People come at this the wrong way, forget India and let's talk about you. Do you get an upset stomache at home? Do you food poison yourself? If so, you better just go around the world eating in chain restaurants, western hotel breakfast service, processed food wrapped in plastic, health insurance on your credit card, plane ticket, personal insurance and work insurance all at once.

If you're a normal person you will find that normal Indian food is perfectly fine, but that Indian water is not pottable. "Not pottable" doesn't mean "don't drink it", it means "contaminated". Don't brush your teeth with it, don't wash fruit with it, don't drink tea made from it.

This is illegal in the US now. Stuff like this is why the FDA was formed, it was very common 100 years ago. Even still, our food regulations are poor, but they are a lot better than they were. Dyeing vegetables, injecting them with chemicals, and spraying them with silicone? Terrible practices. The spray can probably be washed off, but the dye and chemicals are right out. These types of practices in agriculture is why I've been working on my produce garden and trying to become more self-sufficient on my groceries. My produce isn't entirely organic, but it's a lot better than this.

I went to a nice looking street food stall that was on the bank of the Ganges and the food tasted great and came with huge chunks of beef in it and cost me only 25 US cents however I came back later and saw the guy who ran it hacking off pieces of a rotting cow that had thick clouds of flies around it and throwing them in a boiling pot.

The cloud of flies was so dense that I saw small chunks of rotted cow flesh about the size of a baby's hand moving through the air and the guy was actually grabbing the small chunks the flies were taking and flinging them into the pot. Naturally I was quite sickened by this and threw up and almost choked on my vomit as a bunch of wild dogs and street children started lapping up my sick of the floor.

I cancelled my trip and flew back home soon after however on the plane home I started shitting uncontrollably in the toilet strained so hard my anus prolapsed and I felt it touch the bowl of the toilet, eventually though I push it back inside me. Upon landing I went to my doctor and got tested for everything and then some, I got a bunch of false positives because of how many different strains of bacteria I had ingested but by and large I came out OK and had to just take antibiotics for a while.

All in all it wasn't a pleasant experience and I'm still feeling the effects of my trip all these years later. Indian food has been totally ruined for me.

A friend of mine drank some coca cola from a fast food joint in Varanasi and caught bacterial meningitis. He only drank coca cola because he thought it'd be safe because coke has high standards everywhere however the restaurant he went to had a soda machine and the water being mixed with coke syrup was pumped from the river Ganges so it didn't matter in the end. He survived but he has severe brain damage now.
