19870657 No.19870657 [Reply] [Original]

I'm in America on a business trip. Why does every single brand of cheese print this on their packaging? What else could cheese possible be? I'm aware that Kraft American cheese isn't the standard for cheese everywhere in the US, but why are seemingly normal types of cheese also advertising that they are, in fact, real cheese? In a few cases it even seemed like "Real Cheese" was being used to make the cheese seem fancy, almost like how Organic and All Natural are used.
This is not meant to be a "do Americans really" bait thread, I'm genuinely curious how this came to be.

100%, Real, and Natural are not regulated descriptions by the USDA/FDA
They mean nothing at all in other words. Cheese however is a regulated term so you know what you are getting.

>>19870657
I think because of American FDA regulations,(demanding milk is pasteurised) real cheese in the USA is a bit of a novelty, hence the 'big deal' on marketing and packaging.

There is also a cultural element in that American dishes appear to just add cheese as an adornment (as in the case of 'melty' cheese) rather than a component of a meal; To be honest, it really works in the case of beefburgers but very little else.

I'm not sure I could point to a specific singular cause but between the late 40's and 70's there was a explosion of consumerism.
This was exacerbated by the refusal to put meaningful regulations on corporate marketing and laughably ineffective regulatory agencies like the FDA, USDA, etc failing to do anything more than rubber stamp whatever "regulations" the very businesses they were meant to oversee lobbied for.
As someone else said they like to use specific terminology as loopholes to get around accurate labeling. Be on the lookout for "made with", "contains", and "organic/all natural" as these terms have basically no legal definition.

>> No.19871080

Yeah that's a good call. A lot of the shit like "BPA-free" "Ptoa/Ptfe-free" is quite literally just the manufacturer minutely changing the chemical formula of a product and saying "Hey now it's totally not the same thing!" For all intents and purposes it's still the same.
American business and regulatory structures owe a lot of their psychopathic tendencies to economists like Milton (((Friedman))) that pushed the bullshit idea that a companies only duty is to its shareholders, and the only regulatory agency should be "the free market forces".

because faggots memed that american cheese is some sort of artifical chemical plastic abomination when in reality its just regular cheese emulsified with oil. Normies believe whatever they are told so they have to be told that their cheese is actually cheese. To be fair, it's traditionally made out of low quality cheese and cheese scraps but it is still 'real cheese' and always has been real cheese.

the reason it says that cause "cheese food" is a common thing in america cause its legally not cheese, like american cheese which is not actually cheese since theres just substitutions

either way all most of commercial american cheese are processed and not real cheese regardless of it saying 100% real cheese and pouring milk in it doesnt make it an actual cheese

This, it's why you see all kinds of retarded shit labeled prominently as gluten free despite being products that would have no good reason to contain gluten and should therefore require no labeling as such. Manufacturers recognize that retarded people will buy more of their thing if they add dumb shit to labels that any reasonably intelligent person would never pay attention to.
