Yes, it's great when you find a good place for it. Most places will fuck it up royally and make it totally un-spicy and un-numbing. But when you have a real good mapo tofu, it fucks. Pic related, these guys just bit into a banger of a mapo tofu.

It'll depend where you live, I guess. I've had some truly awful mapo tofu which tasted as if it was made with tomato ketchup or something, but usually in the UK it'll be made pretty accurately because of all the Chinese students. It certainly won't be Sichuan levels of spice, but it'll have enough spice and lots of numbing Sichuan peppercorns to make it a good reproduction. Most Britons (including myself) would simply die if exposed to Sichuan levels of spice and I don't blame anyone for wanting to avoid a manslaughter charge.

Heavens Feel inspired me to make it for the first time. Became my favorite dish. Chinese cooking demystified on YouTube has a great tutorial. Buying the right kind of doubanjiang is most important so try to get the exact same one as in whatever recipe you use. If a recepie doesn't specify then it's useless. There's dark, light, oil, and non oil.
Like other anon said, unless the restaurant actually takes pride in schicuanese food, never get it at a restaurant. Especially as a first try.

I use the seriouseats/kenji recipe but add diced mushrooms at the start. God damn is it good.

I've had okay luck at restaraunts but its never quite as good. There are a lot of styles of mapo tofu and too many of them don't have szechuan peppercorns.

ufotable's adaptations are literally just fancy animated highlight reels with voice acting, they omit way too much context, specially UBW. If you want a properly adapted Nasu work just watch Kara no Kyoukai unless you have the attention span of a 5 year old. It's completely understandable not wanting to read Nasu's extremely long novels, but it's another thing entirely to assume that most adaptations of his works are decent enough to outright slam everyone who suggests reading the novels. It's always been a novel-based writing circle up until very recently with their current cashcow (Grand Order) and even then it's heavily reliant on novel writing if you want to take anything substantial out of it, even if it is hot garbage.
