had to travel across state lines to pick up the Laphroaig and Bunnahabhain and because it was the week of my birthday I got the wine for a penny.

the Bunna is a steal right now because its $32.99 , which like $10-15 less than normal shelf price and is better imo than the Toitech A D'ha I paid over $80 for earlier this year.

Laphroaig 16 is good, but a bit stiff on the neck pour. after a couple hours it was starting to remind me of the 2016 batch of Lore I bought 2 years ago, pretty heavy vanilla on the nose.

wine is not my favorite but this one is ok after it's gotten some air.

so far I've only had Machir Bay from Kilchoman and it reminded me of an 80/20 mix of Laphroaig and Caol Ila I made at home one night.

I think the 2022 Loch Gorm is still available to me for about $100 after tax, but again at that price I want more abv at least. If I were any dumber I'd have already bought it based on the packaging alone.

Currently sipping Bunna 12 and Laga 16. The Laga was a recent gift (coworker who exchanges wine/beer with me and wanted to impress me on my birthday) and I have to say, maybe it's changing tastes, but I don't find the same pleasure in it that I used to back when I first started drinking scotch. The Bunna was a spur-of-the-moment purchase: I remembered I liked it years ago but never went back to it. It's one of the best I've tried in recent memory, so I'm sure to buy another bottle immediately after this one.

I've been curious to try Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10 (or Cask Strength?) but I have bad memories of trying Highland Park 12 a decade ago and gagging every time I even smelled it. That was back in university when I only drank beer, bourbon, and spirits aged in sherry casks, so my tastes have changed since then. But I'm still afraid of having the same gut-reaction to the strong smoke/peat. Any advice?

smells great, but the bite from the salt makes ya shudder like a vinegar stroke,

>strong peat smoke
its known for being lightly peated + sherries + coastal. if it tasted wrong as well it could have been corked.

my first intro to peat was Benriach Curiositas and love it to this day and a damn shame they changed the formula and the styling. Ardbeg 10 was next and while good its just very singular most of the time. Then I got Uigeadail a few months later and the hype certainly didnt meet the expectations. Got Laphroaig Lore at the end of that year and knew I was Team Frog. All that said I would still buy Ardbeg An Oa because it's not the 10 which is said to be very inconsistent now, not the Wee Beastie(see >>19795149) and it's still reasonably priced. it's just that maybe 1/4-5 bottles I buy will be notably peated, so those bottles last me 2-3 years on average.

I wouldn't suggest trying them at a bar or buying sample bottles because like most other bottles the heavily peated stuff will have substantial changes over the first 2-4 weeks once opened and even if you donf love it at the time set it aside and try it a couple times a year as your tastes may change.

Springbank and its alternatives are the next biggest flavor challenge. Less peat, more industrial.

old stuff can be great but pretty finicky as well. the older it is the more time it takes to unfold and reach its potential. water helps to a degree, but air + time is unbeatable. younger stuff is pretty easy access but the depth of complexity will be much lower and that's if you can focus on what your tasting enough to notice the benefits.

>>19795804
Lagavulin is known for its coal smoke note. to me Ardbeg has a noticeable metallic note and almost a cooling menthol type profile outside the smoke. modern Laphroaig is briny, citrusy(half juice, half zest) and peppery with lots of vanilla from the ex bourbon hogsheads(the sweetness part). pre Beam-Suntory Laphroaig is said to have been a very fruity distillate without the modern style of very overt smoke.

Hey, I'm >>19795463 and I ended up getting a bottle of the Ardbeg 10 tonight. I opened it and poured one out immediately, let it sit for 5 minutes while I sniffed it, and then took a sip. The smell was lovely full of strong, smoky, briny, salty, sweet flavors. The first taste, after 5 minutes of turning, was magical but then the taste of something I could describe as metallic started to settle on my palette and overpower the smoke and brine. Letting it sit for another few minutes before I go in for another sip, but the thing that amazes me most is that first sip and the smell that seems to change the longer it sits in the glass. Old Grand-Dad 114 is the manliest whisky ever. That's 114 for 114 proof. With 27% rye in the mash bill, it's got spice and kick. This is not a smooth whiskey. This is a delicious, intensely flavorful, complex and balanced whiskey that'll put hair on your chest. I highly recommend this intensely masculine bottle of poison wood water.
Just look at this shit. Even the massive fucking cork is manly as shit.

Canadian whiskey can be pretty fucked. Because of the way that alcohol is priced and taxed in Canada (mandatory minimum prices imposed by the government), there isn't really a market for bottom shelf booze, because it will arbitrarily be priced the same as actually decent stuff. So a lot of really awful whiskey is produced and bottled exclusively for export. The laws for labelling our whiskey are also fucked, basically "rye" and "whiskey" are synonymous, so a bottle of whiskey with 0 rye in the mash can and will say "Rye" right on the label.

tl;dr Canada exports a lot of bottom shelf corn whiskey, do your research or end up with swill.

Tried the Blantons original and that just wasn’t worth the price at all. I wouldn’t even have said it would been worth 100 euro. But I opened up a bottle of bowmore 25 and it was one of the nicest drams I’ve ever had it was so subtle with the smoke but I could pick out everything else each time I sipped. No. Scotches just take to extended aging better than bourbons and Irish whiskies. You can't really age bourbons too long because they utilize new oak barrels so it's very easy to overdo the tannins. As for Irish whiskies, the spirits themselves have more delicate flavors which are more easily overpowered by the oak with extended aging.

The Lost Spirits guy came up with a legit speed ager that works incredibly well. Lost Spirits Abomination: The Sayers of the Law was unironically the best peated whisky I have ever had. It was young Islay whisky speed-aged with charred oak staves from Riesling casks for a couple of weeks and it had the oak flavor of something aged for 25 years. It had this incredible BBQ meat-like flavor - strong peat and strong char along with savoriness. It was absurdly good.
His speed ager basically exposes the whisky to heat and light.
I think consumers are extremely skeptical of speed-aging techniques and that's why companies have been slow to adopt it but it's absolutely legit when done correctly.

nothing wrong with a good blended malt(pic related).

Scarabus and Islay Gold are safe and effect and are cheap enough to still go toe to toe with Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig's of the same price. It may not be your preference, but they are still comparable.

Dewars is swill and Black Bottle is a shadow of its former glory.

>not cheap bottles
damage certainly could've been worse(pic related), but generally that brand competes within the low end of premium single malt price range.
>first time seeing Islay Gold
it was on special at TotalWine. $38 for 10 year Islay single malt and 2 laser etched glencairns is a steal. I was tempted to buy the 25 year old version, but its shelf price jumped from $130 to $180... for 40%? cant do it.
>Black Bottle good again
it's not well distributed in the US and I'll be damned if I'm paying $12-$38 shipping to get a taste of a $20 bottle(maybe for Nevis Dew if I'm feeling cheeky)
>tastings/contrasts
even nice grains get beat down by basic single malts, but yeah most of the time anymore if I'm not comparing 2 or more pours at a time I dont have as good a time with any one particular glass.

I want to branch out to other spirits but my budget is only big enough for very occasional splurges and I feel like nothing else is going to hit the spot quite like Scotch so I'm really apprehensive about committing to dropping $200-$300 on a handful of bottles that could have easily been spent on perfectly fine whisky, especially since it seems that their prices are chasing other luxury products.
