If light rye is on the table, I would like it to be toasted crisp but not charred. Ideally the toasting would give the faces of the bread a maillard tan somewhere in the neighbourhood of that of the pre-toasted crust. Ideally, when the toast is buttered, it should be reminiscent of oiled mahogany, and when bitten into it, a crunch that wouldn't be out of place in a foley artist's repertoire as he mimics the snapping of ancient bone should give way immediately to a satisfying chewiness on par with the fat of a rare prime rib.
