Set up a cold brew at room temperature for tomorrow.

>30 gr of decaffeinated dark roast

1/2 will go in the cold raw milk for brekkie

1/2 will go in iced cold water for an evening fresh beverage that I will sip while I watch extremely racist content online

Usually the quantity of water minus the coffee weight + 50%, so in this case it would be 150 - (30+50%) = 105 grams.

Tomorrow I’ll weight the resulting liquid for a more precise answer.

Does the quality of coffee bean effect how well a moka pot works?

I had a bag of good quality, pre-ground (fine espresso-type grind) beans and it brewed perfectly every time. Only a tiny little bit of water left in the base.

Then I bought a big bag of cheap ass "10 pounds for a dollar" type beans to use with a new grinder. Regardless of how coarse or fine I grind the beans it always finishes brewing too early and leaves like a third of the water behind. I even bought one of those needle distribution tools to make sure there were no clumps.

It's the same amount of water and heat used with both.

If it's not the quality of the beans then maybe my new grinder is dog shit and isnt producing the same consistency of grounds that you get with pre-ground.

>> No.19594611

>>19594600
The type of coffee absolutely effects how water flows through it, but if you went fine or coarse enough you should still be able to control it. What grinder are you using?

>> No.19594621

>>19594611
>What grinder are you using?

A really shitty one. It's a bladed, store-brand one-button "hold the button until the coffee looks right" grinder. But it was 15 dollars, hence the accompanying bag of cheap beans to test it with.

I did put a fine grind from it through a sieve to completely remove bigger chunks and leave a uniform quality of grind, almost identical in shape to the better quality fine pre-ground, and got the same poor result, making me think it was more than just the grinder at fault.

>> No.19594630

>>19594621
Oh yeah lol you're not gonna get anywhere with that. Either get a quality grinder or keep getting preground. Well there are some other options too, some roasters offer to grind coffee for you after roasting, so you get quality fresh roasted coffee that's also ground (but will stale much faster than beans still, it's just not going to be sitting on a store shelf for 3 months before you get your hands on it). Another option is public use grinders, some stores have them.

>> No.19594656

>>19594630
Ah figured, thanks!

>> No.19594670

>>19594600
grind size( and quality of the grinder) and bean freshness are more important than "quality"
because the moka works on "percolation" the more gas thats in the beans(aka how fresh are the beans) you will see a faster brew because the increase in gas will increase how bubbly the coffee is which will increase how fast it climbs up the spout.
you can notice the difference even between 2 week old bean and 3-4 week old beans.
and a lighter roast will also change this.
so your in vs out ratio and the time it takes is going to vary a noticeable amount.
which i think is pretty cool.

>> No.19594715

>>19593165
No they don't.
I still use a saucepan to infuse boiling water with 'ffee, some of the grounds and oils remain adding a richer roastier flavor to my cuppa,
and since it reaches boiling point each time its used its probably fine.

brewed the Burundi in a chemex style brewer. my brew time went a little longer so the bitterness is probably my fault, not the beans. I'm getting berry notes in the cup and it gets sweeter as it cools. it's not the best goffee I've ever had, but it's better than the Tanzania peaberry that I got from a local roaster.

Define expensive. Grinders with burrs like pic related are not worth it at all. Inconsistent grind, too many fines, too much static, too much retention, hard to clean. You're better off using a blade grinder. Entry level electric burr grinders (that are worth using over preground and rotary blade grinders) start around 200 USD. There are a number of good hand grinders cheaper than that, look for a reputable brand with steel burrs within your price range and you should be fine.

I get the general theory behind why more uniform grinds produce better coffee, particularly for brew methods like espresso where you're operating at very high pressures and the water remains in contact with the coffee for a very short time (so minor adjustments can make a more noticeable impact). But does it matter as much for more forgiving brew methods? I've read that you can't really over-extract in immersion brewing, so surely grind uniformity is much less important there if you just steep for long enough?

Hello /ctg/, I have been seeking good light roasts for my espresso and been buying from some foreign and domestic roasters (I'm in Texas)

1. Morgon coffee roasters (Gothenburg, Sweden): Had Colombian Yobani Ramos which is now sold out, took a while to get here but was still within a week of roasting when it arrived. Was pretty good but nothing to write home about. I've heard excellent things about this so I will be trying a different coffee.

2. La Cabra (Aarhus, Denmark): Only hadthe Kenyan roast Karimikui, I was really excited to receive it because I've heard Scandi light roasts are a whole other ballpark from anything found this side of the ocean. Was badly disappointed, the roast took me a while to dial in and the best cups I made with it were generic at best

3. Onyx coffee lab (Arkansas, USA): Had Costa Rica Las Lapas heirloom Ethiopia (it's an Ethiopian varietal grown in CR). Hated it. The coffee wasn't bad, in fact some people might have liked it, but there was this mangoey-bananaey flavor in it which I've seen in a Mexican roast before and absolutely despise. Will probably try another Onyx as I don't think this is reflective of their general quality

4. Luna coffee roasters (BC, Canada): Absolutely floored with how good the two roasts I've had with them have been. Had Kamwangi AA, which had a tomatoey flavor and not a hint of bitterness, no issues with sourness. It may well be the favorite coffee I've had at home, and would buy a few kilos for my freezer if it were still available. Very sad that it's not. I bought Techno Peach (currently available), a whole kg this time, and it's another incredibly sweet and flavorful coffee, with a good body that doesn't sacrifice the light floral tones for that generic dark roast flavor. A significant portion of the coffee beans are peaberries/caracolillos which I think add to the flavor. Will be freezing a good chunk of it for special occasions.

What have /ctg/ users liked in the past? Anything special in the USA?

Its a knockoff of a knockoff. Kingrinder is 1zpresso's "sister company", probably just some chinese/taiwanese money laundering from the execs. If you want to pay for better quality/alignment/tolerances, the 1zpresso K uses the same burr, but likely a higher "bin" at ~2x the price. If you want to pay even more for the german "handmade original", there's the comandante c40 and c60. The catch is its a $100 chinese grinder. Your mileage may vary. Maybe you get a poorly assembled unit and have to take it apart and reseat everything, but at $100 its a ridiculous entry point compared to shit that gets recommended like encores, smart grinder pros and the cheap timemores.

Key notes on the package: red currant, dark chocolate and lemon.

To the nose there’s a lot of lemon and citrus, you can feel them both when smelling the beans/ground coffee and the extracted coffee.

I grinded @ on the JX Pro 1.8.0 which is my reference starting point for the moka pot.

The lemon notes are strong and overwhelming, you can feel acidity at the back of your mouth, there’s a defined bitterness that reminds me of extremely dark chocolate, which comes through at the end of the sip.
The aftertaste is mildly sweet and bitter at the same time, I don’t necessarily feel the red berries but it’s an acidic fruity note combined with chocolate.

Overall it’s not my kind of goffee, I don’t like this kind of acidity but then again I found the other Ethiopian goffee from Caffelab (the one with Chinotto notes) very good, so it’s up to how balanced these notes are.

Full medium roast, overall good quality.

Would not buy again.

If you want a proper latte, you'll need espresso and steamed milk. Electric espresso machines can be very expensive, manual ones are cheaper but they have more work involved and they usually don't have a steam wand so you'll need to find another way to produce steamed milk. Espresso making is something that can require a significant time and money investment, which means it's not for everyone but the results can be rewarding.

If you just want a milky coffee drink that tastes nice without breaking the bank, you can follow this video:

Basically he makes a concentrated coffee base (but not strong enough to be real espresso) using a moka pot or Aeropress, then heats up some milk (in the microwave or on a stove) and foams it with a French press. So that could be a much more budget friendly alternative if you just want to dip your toe into this stuff before deciding if you want a real espresso machine. The Aeropress is also a pretty versatile brewer that can be used for filter coffee and iced coffee, and it's pretty easy to use and clean, which makes it popular with beginners.

the best "cheap" manual grinder for espresso would probably be something like 1zpresso or kingrinder
you also need to take the actual grinding into consideration, grinding for espresso every single day might be quite exhausting (for some), if you value comfort it might be worth investing into a electrical one
grinders are usually more expensive than the actual espresso machines

I did it daily for years. Not a big deal unless you're making espressos for a family of 12 every morning. It got more annoying when I started pulling very light coffees on high flow baskets. Just keep in mind the next "better" conical grinder up from those on the list would be a niche so unless you're willing to drop $600 or whatever they cost now hand grinders are a steal. And you might still end up preferring the smaller, lower rpm burr in the cup. Taste is a weird thing.

Dial in mean getting it just right according to some parameter. You can dial in pourover, espresso, anything. If steps are too big, it means you adjust it up and down and might end up too fine or too coarse, and you realize there’s a “just right” in-between setting that’s not available.
