Sure if you eat too much of it.
The same thing will happen if you eat too many monosaccharides as well.
There is a disconnect when people think of healthy food with sugar in it, often times when they use natural sugars, they end up using less because they cost more than HFCS which is loaded into anything by companies looking to cut costs.
Both will make you fat, both will give you cancer, there natural sugars aren't the silver bullet you think they are.
