https://finance.yahoo.com/news/chicken-noodle-soup-king-campbell-just-spent-27-billion-to-buy-raos-sauces-113417456.html
>Campbell Soup (CPB) is back in the acquisition game — and this time it's for pricier pasta sauce. The king of chicken noodle soup said on Monday it would pay $2.7 billion — or $23 a share — to acquire Rao's pasta sauce maker Sovos Brands. The purchase price represents a 27% premium to Sovos Brands' closing price on Friday.

>It marks Campbell's largest acquisition since it plunked down $4.87 billion to buy pretzel leader Snyder's-Lance in 2018. Rao's — which went public in 2021 — will join a Campbell sauce portfolio consisting of lower priced Prego and Swanson broths. The company posted $878.4 million in net sales last year and $67.8 million in net income.
And thus the only decent store-bought pasta sauce is now gone.

There's no way in fuck you're making flavorful tomato sauce with .99 cent cans of tomatoes, or grocery store tomatoes without spending more than it costs for a jar of sauce, unless you're just growing your own stuff. Once those tomatoes cook down you're going to need a lot of them, and the actually ripe ones go for 2-3 USD a lb. Now figure you're going to need more than a pound to make 16 oz of sauce, at least one onion, garlic, etc; you are fucked.

>Ingredients: Italian Whole Peeled Tomatoes, Olive Oil, Onions, Salt, Garlic, Basil, Black Pepper, Oregano.

Surprisingly not bad for a national brand. It's not even an ultra-processed food, just a normal processed food made from real ingredients. Kinda rare these days.

However! I can make sauce myself in about the time it takes to heat water and cook pasta anyway. These jarred sauces don't really save time.

>saute some garlic in olive oil, throw in basil stems if I need to get rid of them, add a couple of shallots or an onion or some hot peppers, whatever I feel like
>saute some cherry tomatoes in there to release juices
> add a good can of peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand, seasoned with salt and pepper
>throw in some fresh basil right at the end before pasta goes in
>toss the pasta in there, thin with pasta water as needed

That's the joy of pasta for me, I will never forgive my parents for raising me on jarred pasta sauce. I had to learn the right way to cook and eat pasta from fucking youtube.

RETARD ALERT. San Marzano is a cultivar name for a specific tomato. When you breed a new tomato that people want you can name it in your preferred Native American language. Italians breed better tomatoes than the Indians who found it; wow what a shock.
