The average age of a farmer in America is almost 60. What's going to happen in 20 years when they're all gone?

Who cares? This isn't the 1700s. No one buys food from farms anymore. Just go to the local supermarket or grocery store.

Independent farmers are a meme at this point, you can't compete with the scale of big ag. The last remaining farmers will sell their farms to big ag or real estate developers because none of their children will want to inherit the low profit subsidy-dependent business and all the remaining farming work will be done by illegals.

probably only rich people will have real farm food, everyone else will eat mass produced crackers and ramen

>> No.19567340

we already outsource most of our produce demand to mexico. all farmers in the US farm are grain, dairy and meat. we might start buying pork and poultry from mexico and china, but honestly this probably just means lower quality goods from larger scale operations, and price hikes. americans might start eating fish again, shitty farmed fish like catfish and tilapia

You know the whole "thvs of then, hence of now" meme, that young people convince themselves is proof that all new-hating is just generic culture clash? I'm starting to understand that what it really proves is that there's no such thing as rock bottom. Things will just get worse and worse and the only limit to how bad things are going to get are the physical limitations of the universe. And those are surprisingly pliable.

that's approximately the average age of a white person in America

most farmers are part of megacorps or substantially in debt from their million dollar tractors/equipment they can't even repair without permission. what will happen is the same thing that's happening to housing, megacorps will buy up everything and you will enjoy your AmazonFarms produce from your AmazonHomes apartment

>What's going to happen in 20 years when they're all gone?

Whatever land that isn't inherited or otherwise passed on to children, grandchildren, etc..(Which will probably be a lot for this reason: >>19567220) Will probably be bought by companies or corporate entities who'll just cut the middle man out entirely and have every single aspect be it's own individual thing done by contracted workers. They'll pay somebody some pocket change to seed, another to weed, the irrigation will be automated, then they'll get illegals to pick the crops, etc.. etc..

>>19567340
>we might start buying pork and poultry from mexico and china
>China

Won't happen. Market doesn't work like that way with China and pork.
China is the number 1 consumer and importer of pork on the planet- it has big cultural importance to the Chinese people. They produce it in massive quantities, they buy it from America and Canada, and they consume it all themselves.

CSAs in the places that care, big ag in the places that don't. Most farmers are leveraged up to the gills to afford their insanely expensive harvesting equipment and don't even own the land they farm on, so those lands will go fallow when they pass. I expect at some time in the near future we're going to see a major push from the USDA and farming organizations nationwide to reach out to the urban poor and get them to move out to the country for farm jobs. We'll probably get another CCC/WPA when a president finally realizes that public infrastructure is fukken crumbling
