So like 18-19g in the double shot basket works fine in my breville barista pro..but the 1 shot basket filled with 9-10g doesnt pull right and comes out as a watery muddy not solid mess instead of solid puck. What gives? Also after a few months of owning the bbp as an espresso amateur I started really timing my shots. Manually pulling the shots as opposed to pressing the button and letting the machine just pull 45g(ml?) Of liquid. Shots seem to taste better. Idk. If you drink 10 cups of coffee a day with your family and friends then yes. Otherwise personally I find it a bit excessive when compared to something a bit "simpler" like just a basic pour-over set. I don't think moccamasters really make your coffee necessarily any better than many cheaper coffee makers but their relatively industrial design, spare parts availability and overall build quality are just nice and maybe worth the price but kinda go to waste if you just drink one cup a day.

I'm an instant coffee guy.

Not that instant coffee tastes better than regular coffee, but it's more convenient to have around not just to save time on brewing coffee but also because instant coffee can be added to stuff readily like in batters for sweet baked goods and as a spice in certain sauces and gravies.

I like to add some to my chocolate cake and brownie batters, chocolate sauce for ice cream, and sometimes to my warm breakfast cereals.

>> No.19572545

If you're dead set on instant at least try to get decent instant. It exists, although it's hard to find. Most instant tastes like dogshit because the focus isn't just on convenience but on price, so companies brew coffee using industrial processes to extract as much as possible from the beans. When making coffee you usually extract around 20% of the solubles from the coffee into the water, with instant it's closer to 50%. Which means they make more than twice the amount of drink for the same amount of coffee, but also means that the result tastes like total shit.

I time them and weigh them. All is good. But the consistency is so hot and miss. One day I pull on a certain grind setting and it comes out decent than the next shot same everything and it pulls to fast or slow. Adjust the grind setting and even worse more variation in consistency. I'm thinking profitec go because I don't steam milk often and don't make shot after shot. Only about 3 a day. Lol yes I did do my due diligence. I'm not planning on buying something new anytime soon, just testing the waters and getting an idea for what I should buy when the time comes. I decided on the bbp due to it being an all in one machine for my first dive into the espresso world. (Integrated water filter, came with tamper,l which I never actually used btw, integrated grinder cuz there's so many I have no idea what to choose so I just went with the simple choice.) Don't be mad that I can afford to upgrade to better machine so so quickly..

I'd say upgrade the grinder first, use it for a bit, and then decide whether or not you want to upgrade the machine as well.
As for what grinder, I've been looking at lower budget espresso grinders myself recently. The one most appealing to me right now is the varia vs3, but it's single dose and also the company is pretty new and has had some issues in the past so it's maybe a risky option. The baratza settee gets recommended a lot although it's loud as fuck. Both of these are around $300, what price range are you aiming at?

They’re dry anon.

Mainly because I wash them dozens of times a day, secondly because being an allergic subject (pollens and dust) my skin is fucked up and has atopic reactions - luckily entirely localised to the hands - so it gets super dry and cracks, giving me pain. During the summer the hands are mostly ok but in the winter they’re super fucked and bleed from the cuts.

The dermatologist said that usually these are temporary conditions because the allergy can hit different parts of the skin, so my hands won’t be like this forever…but it has been like this for at least 3 years now.

God chose to punish me.

sorry anon, but i know how you feel
i have psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis at varying degrees that choose to pop up at random for no reason.
i have after 2 years just been able to """remove""" the psoriasis from between my hands
and i use a special shampoo for the psoriasis for my scalp/head which is as far as i can tell, magic.
because as long as i use it every day there is no problem and i can keep it in check very well
also each skin problem isnt really helped by the treatment the other ones need.
it runs in the family.
mum and sister both got it too.
diet for me doesnt really change anything.
seems like the only thing that does anything comes in a tiny $30 tube.

For the past few months I've been using one of these to make cold brew coffee. I empty two 16oz bottles of water into it and some freshly ground up columbian beans and toss it in the fridge overnight. I only drink 16oz of coffee a day and so I end up making coffee every other day with this method. It has two different lids, one with a filter for pouring and another lid with just a gasket to seal it (though the seal isn't super tight). I've been wondering how long coffee like this lasts in the fridge. I think I'm safe with how my coffee never lasts more than two days (and I wash it out with hot water every time), but will coffee become moldy if I leave it in much longer?

I'm happy for you anon, I still haven't found a solution and to be honest the skin condition is the last of my problems.
The main issue, which has ruined my life to the point of making me a recluse, depressed and super anxious prisoner of my house, is the severe dry eyes that decided to happen to me years ago.
I tried everything but despite not having any auto immune disease at all, my body doesn't produce tears and that happened when my skin turned dry too.

Doctors say that it can be happened because "it is what it is" but chances are that everything can be connected to my constant depression that only keeps getting worse because of the clown world, it has evolved to the point that now I have severe reactions to organs and body parts caused by my mind.
Depression and anxiety has fucked up my stomach to the point of being in need of surgery to stop acid reflux forever, now I have muscular pain because I'm always stiff, etc..

Coffee is what's keeping me alive at the moment, it gives me the least amount of energy I can thrive off of to keep surviving until the next week, because the curiosity of trying a new coffee makes me happy.

I didn't want to share these info, but I mean, who gives a fuck at this point.

The most expensive part of a basic coffee kit is a grinder in most cases, a decent quality hand grinder is like $100 or more.
Other than that for a pour over you need the actual brewer, which can range from $10 for a plastic v60 to like $30 for a glass or porcelain one, a carafe if you wanna be fancy and if you want full faggot points you'll want a gooseneck kettle, which is another $30 for a stovetop one, a bit more for an electric one and let's say $120 or more for a temperature controlled electric one.

Niche Zero (450 bong bucks) vs Niche Duo (550 bongbucks)
Are the flat burrs worth the price increase? I am yet to find a review that actual compares it against the Zero

>> No.19575674

Without a doubt, depending on the coffee you're making. If you just want traditional 9 bar 1:2 shots with Lidl beans, go for the zero.

Its an old school bimodal italian espresso grinder. If you're looking for texture above all else, it'll give it to you. A JX-pro/kin k4 will give you clearer, more fruit/acid focused brews. Taking the hopper off a mignon and tilting it doesn't really do that much to make it a single doser.

>> No.19575737

So it looks like df64 is a great deal for 65mm flat burr single dose grinder. But there's so many weird variations and sellers. Can anyone recommend where to buy the best version for espresso?

Its a grinder made by a chinese industrial appliance manufacturer called zhe jiang feilai. Various vendors have subbranded them to Turin/G-iota/whatever the fuck.

Ah yes Thankyou. Even that site is shady looking and weird. I have to personally email them to ensure what I want will be or is in stock before I order. Any-hoo. I'm thinking either niche duo or df64 with the high uniformity burr upgrade.

They sell preorders based off the stock they're getting in from aliexpress sea freight. Off the top of my head the differences are
>E-electronic dosing with hopper
>V-variable rpm
>P-"premium", comes with cheap wooden accents, pretty sure its actually worse than the normal df64
>df64 v5-second newest revision of the original
>df64 gen 2- newest, has the antistatic plasma generator from the df83+no more cheap vinyl wrap.
Heres the lagom burr chart for the p64. Might give you a little more insight into what set you'd want. The mizens are option-o's own version of the ditting lab sweet geometry. SSP calls their version Cast version 2. I run the 80mm casts from ditting and really like them for light-medium espresso and filter.

Can't find the df64 gen2. I am interested in that because I saw the YouTube review showing the horrible static and the rubber anticlumper which looks like it just makes grinds get stuck. I guess the v5 is what I would get with upgraded espresso burrs.

I started with this setup because my girlfriend got it cheap on sale at HomeGoods. The machine is ok, not stellar, but workable as long as you're not using light roasts. The grinder is kinda shitty. If you're willing to use a hand grinder, you can get a k4 and a scale for significantly less and end up with a more consistent grind.
If I were to start again, I'd buy something else, since there are better options in a similar price range.

Where are you getting them for that price? The website price is £540 for the Zero vs £780 for the Duo with both burr sets.

I have the Niche Zero and I find it fits my needs well. Looks good, doesn't take up too much space, simple to use. For espresso it really stands out with the medium to dark roasts, but light roasts still work well. I don't have much comparison to other expensive grinders, and I know a lot of people disagree but I also really enjoy the filter coffee that it produces too.

If I had the option and the money at the time, Id probably have gone for the Duo as long as the burr changing is straight forward. I normally do a few weeks of filter, then back to espresso for a few weeks etc. Switching out the burrs once every few weeks isn't that much effort and if it has a reasonable impact on quality then id say its worth it.

Is siphon coffee a meme?
It’s everywhere in Japan but they charge like double to triple the price for a cup of it compared to standard pour over (and 95% of Japanese coffee shops suck dick anyways) so I’ve never bought a cup. However I really like the aesthetic of it and am considering buying pic related but have no idea what it’s like

>> No.19576293

Its the fanciest way to make an okay cup of coffee. Shines more on darker roasts(typical for jap cafes) and people like them because it stinks up the place like no other brewing method. I'd consider it closer to french press on steroids than any filter/drip method.

You're basically boiling coffee like potpourri in an open vessel for a couple minutes. Unless you're using lavazza tier coffee I wouldn't say it'll reek, but its going to be more fragrant than other methods. Cafes like them because its a spectacle, and they get to charge more for the service. Think of the "fajita effect" in restaurants. You see a fancy sizzling plate that smells good, thats probably what you want to order.
