Creamy mashed potatoes are an abomination. Mashed potatoes should be dry, not buttery or rich. They should taste like potatoes. Only then can they be appropriately joined with a flavorful protein, vegetable and gravy, and thus take on their proper role, one analogous to that of white rice in the cuisines of the Orient.

For what it's worth I think there is a time and place for decadence in cuisine, even mashy spuds, but for me a normal meal on a normal day should always be more embracing the natural qualities of the food on the plate. Simple, humble appreciation of your food for what it is.
