Bpa plastic, polypropylene and now various tritan blends.
>Our data showed that some (4/14) unstressed and stressed BPA-free thermoplastic resins leached chemicals having significant levels of EA, including one polystyrene (PS), and three Tritan™ resins, the latter reportedly EA-free. Exposure to UV radiation in natural sunlight resulted in an increased release of EA from Tritan™ resins. Triphenyl-phosphate (TPP), an additive used to manufacture some thermoplastic resins such as Tritan™, exhibited EA in both MCF-7 and BG1Luc assays.

Just started getting into making good coffee the proper way. I got a sample pack of beans from the local roaster. One of them was a natural-process Ethiopian. That was a very interesting cup because, for the first time, i actually got the "fruitiness". It wasn't just sour, it tasted complex like fruit, and a little astringent like tea. I actually didnt enjoy it very much because i dont associate that flavor profile with coffee (or hot drinks in general). Should i try grinding it finer to get different notes?

Also interesting was that, of the cups i brewed, that one alone had very little foam or floating particulates. It must be an older roast then, right?

Imagine you can only use a blender on high to process your onions. What good is onion purée on a burger, salsa, soup, to be pickled, stirr fry, to caramelize? Grinder to beans and precise control over grind size is like getting what you need for different purposes/beans, it makes a huge difference. Worth it if you drink often and care about the taste, otherwise not really if you gulp it down and treat it like medicine. It’s value dependent, I know some people who literally don’t care whether they eat McDonald’s or Michelin starred restaurants, it’s just sustenance to them.. they can tell one is better, but they just don’t care

Started my last Caffelab coffee, this one is the Aramo Kebele from Ethiopia and it’s a specialty.

Funnily, I left this one for last because I didn’t like the chinotto citrusy notes and I thought I would have hated it, however I made it yesterday and wow I was amazed by the sharp complexity and structure of this goffee.

The smell when you grind it and when the moka is on the stove is full floreal and you can smell the chinotto too, when you take a sip the first flavour is chinotto, which is a touch butter, followed by a sweet Jasmin floreal note that rebalances the mouth, I guess that there’s honey too within the floreal notes spectrum I feel, then there’s a third layer of “classic coffee” flavours of malt and nuts.

It begins fruity, it quickly becomes floreal and sweet and then it changes again and ends as a nice coffee with persistent finish that stays in your mouth.

Notes: with the reducer on 1 cup (7 grams circa 70 ml water in the reserve) the cup is a bit stronger than what I would like for this coffee, but still good and enjoyable, I may want to grind coarser to slow the extraction, then with the full 3 cups capacity the coffee is perfectly balanced @ 1.8.1 on the JX Pro.

I definitely recommend Caffelab, they’re good.

With the Aeropress?

As the other anon said, essentially more fines but a lot more body and oils, which is the reason why you would want to switch from paper to metal (it’s worth it 100%).

The cleanup is simple, I just take the metal filter (I use a Prismo) and wash it with hot water then I add a drop of dish soap on it and with my finger (no need for a sponge) I wash it and make foam then rinse under hot water. It takes 30 seconds, it’s not a problem at all and the filter stays clean and unclogged always.

As for the fines, you have to play with agitation/steeping time to find the right extraction, however I found that with mine everything under 1.6.0 on my JX pro makes a lot of fines, it also depends on how you press because if the puck is perfectly formed then you’ll have very little fines but if it’s not formed and broken when you remove the plunge then you’ll have more fines. I guess that it comes down to how much pressure you exercise on the plunge.

So, if you have the Aeropress buy the Prismo and avoid other mesh filters.

Pullman+paper filters is close to pcl 2200 hole but I've really been liking the coffee off the pcl more. The pcl cone is very different than the pcl billet I have. Its all preference, but there are differences and going with a dumb basket diameter limits your options. Some people swear by the $5 low flow ridgeless 14g.

I don't mean this as a gotcha but you are a person who owns multiple espresso machines and so are presumably way more invested in coffee than probably anybody else in this thread, and you're saying you would only be confident telling the difference between at 57mm and 58mm cup in comparison to the four machines you're intimately familiar with. I expect a middling coffee autistic like me would probably not get much of the benefit from the difference.

Baskets anon. Baskets. I don't mean this as a gotcha but you should understand what we're talking about before posting. There are psychos out there with $2000+ of baskets sitting on their bench. I parse through their opinions and try shit for myself. If you don't think different flow rates(at the same dose and grind size) make different coffee, I don't think you'll get much benefit from anything.

I'm not arguing that different flow rates make different coffee, I am arguing that the difference in flow rate between a 57mm and a 58mm basket is not gonna be a big perceptible different compared to all the other factors that go into pulling a shot. It's perceptible to you because you're incredibly into the minutiae of optimizing your espresso but there are so many other bigger variables for somebody getting into it.

Not my picture or notes, don't have any e&b just an unlabeled 18g(?) ims from flair. IMS is getting into the varied density baskets though. Just launched the Big Bang. Low flow from the hole count + weird spacing to "counter" donut extractions.
>do you like jammy goffee
I don't mind a bit of texture/blending, but the flavor I'm getting off of (essentially) a fancy high flow basket+paper filters is incredible. I'm not sure what I should be looking at to get "better" than this pcl 2200. Its basically the same exact tapering as a pullman, but with ~3x the holes.

You'd be surprised. My point is there's zero fucking reason to lock yourself into a nonstandard portafilter size on an appliance you're planning on using for years, other than saving a few bucks. And if you need to save a few bucks, you probably shouldn't be dumping money into espresso. If you want a "nonstandard" cheap entry point, a 54mm bambino has way wider availability in the accessory market and Breville owns Lelit anyway.

I have a Safe Barista Express which was about £500 (not sure what that works out to in freedom bucks)
I think for home use this is fine, it's only if you're operating a cafe that you need to go into the thousands of dollars, they're just not designed to last as long with fewer replaceable parts.
I have a friend that runs a burger van / coffee truck and uses one of these, and it broke on him. Turns out that the part the portafilter clamps on to is made out of plastic, and after 10 coffees a day for 2 years, the plastic completely wore away and wasn't a replaceable part. You wouldn't get this on a thousand pound espresso machine, but equally, would you make that quantity of coffee at home?

Ok fuckers you triggered my hypochondria with the comments to this post.
I sometimes make moka coffee too and it happens to me too that the coffee looks like that, maybe less oily but wft.
Why does that happen? Lately my cholesterol levels exceeded the safety level despite changing nothing in my diet and now I fear that it's the coffee. Bros I don't want to stop drinking coffee, it's the only hobby that's keeping me sane.

use a paper filter instead of a metal filter.
paper filters the oils out, metal lets the oil through.
also the oil from coffee is so small i cant imagine it tipping the scales and giving you high cholesterol.

no its just the light.
i drink moka every day and i never looks like that.
also he might have stirred it alot before taking the pic.
like if you put 1 drop of oil into a cup of water(coffee) and then shake it up and then take a picture with the flash on its probably going to look like that.

Hi /ctg/ I don't drink coffee but I do backpacking and like to carry the lightest possible equipment. This is my current set up. Known limitations:

It’s unconfirmed what causes the observed effect on cholesterol, some studies say it’s oil but other theorize it’s the silt or the ultra fines since some studies found filtered coffee different. There’s not enough data, but you could try filtering your coffee and see if your numbers change in a couple months
