I'm from Tennessee and they've been a thing here since the 90s at the least, but they're associated directly with poverty. Black or white, doesn't matter, if you see someone eating that shit they're poor. Like the other anon said it's generally associated more with the Mississippi region, but when I was a kid I saw some people eating them around Nashville too.
