When I was in Japan only food I truly came to love was curry rice.
The British were the ones who introduced it to the Japanese so I believe that's why it agreed with my Western palate so well.
Everything else in that country tasted distinctively foreign.

Yup. My wife and I have a constant battle on weekends. I generally want anything other than Japanese food, as one gets tired of soy sauce and dashi. She always wants teishoku (a kind of Japanese set meal: a small piece of meat/fish w/ veg, plus rice, pickles, miso soup, and salad). She doesn't see how two different Japanese meals are basically the same to me (flavor-wise), and I can't understand how she thinks anything with bread is "the same". Like, if I make sandwiches on Saturday (I bake my own bread) and suggest Pizza on Sunday, she'll be like "We ate bread yesterday! It's the same thing."

i lived in japan for half a year with home cooked meals served every evening so i had a good variety of different classic japanese foods

it's incredibly overrated and a LOT of is super bland. there are some good dishes in japanese cuisine, but a lot of the classic weekday type dinners are just terrible
