Allow me to suggest coturnix quail to you, anon. The quail roosters don't crow, they just do a mild trill. The hens lay nearly one egg every day. A small rabbit hutch will house more than enough for you. You can definitely have them in an apartment. Just like someone would have a parrot etc. Fun fact about quail, they don't carry salmonella. Not in the meat or the eggs. Additionally, the jew landlord FEARS the indoor quail farmer. Grow herbs in your windows for further flexing on your LL/neighbors

yeah dude im so fucked.. got chickens first, then ducks and then geese (ducks and geese raise since 1 week).
for some reason female goose (two females no male) began nesting in may and not leaving nest
that was then copied by one of my female ducks (i have 5 females 1 male) and now the ducks are sitting on 40+ fertile eggs of various stages.
the geese are sitting on them too to help, so i have so many duckings on the way and idk the first thing about them,.
also because fertilized and laid over period of several weeks, theyll be popping out over couple weeks..
i think i get 3 more weeks to go by, see how many are hatched then just throw the rest out..
they dont let me in there to take any of the eggs.. even if just laid, and are taking all the eggs from the 2 females that dont care and that my drake is walking around and fucking silly while these three sit on the nest...
i got two out from them today that were clearly just laid, but the others were well along way of being fertile..
they only leave coop every 2-3 days for 20 minutes so have to be quick if i see them out.. geese havent left in weeks..
i dont think the nesting ones are laying any more eggs... so im down to 2 laying ducks that are bering fertilized and taking under by 2 geese and 3 nesting ducks..
ie i had to buy goyeggs for the first time in 2 years because my neighbours farm stand was away
what the fuck am i keeping these fuckers for if not their eggs..
same time, ill have maybe?? 30 duckings in a few weeks time.. which idk what to do with

They'd be in a cage either way. Remember: unlike chickens, quail can fly. To prevent them flying off, them must be caged. Even clipping is no guarantee because unlike many pet birds, quail don't have any homing because they're not migratory so even if they manage to imprint on you after clipping, there is no guarantee that once their flight feathers grow back they'll stay with you and, in fact, it's far more likely that they'll simply fuck off somewhere.

Correct. Quail prefer the safety of a cage. They'd love to be free but they are very easy targets. Their flying is limited, they definitely can't glide or soar. So you aren't caging a beast by any means. They like to be safe and eat food. That's their life.

Based Georgia Jumbo Coturnix Quail haver. I'm surprised we don't use the acceptable Japanese quail term. Same with Bobwhite quail. They are also known as Virginia quail, which sounds cooler

They can flutter and, at the very least, fly up into trees. Either way, they ain't stayin' where you want'em unless they're enclosed somewhere.

Oh I know, anon. I've kept them for years. I've seen what they can do. Coturnix are the worst flyers. Bobwhites can make some moves, though. Still all ground birds. Doves being the best flyers of them all. Grouse and turkey can do some things, too.

>Doves
Those aren't quail, tho. Unless there's something like a dove-quail or something. Fucking love doves, btw, and they do have a homing instinct. Once they imprint on you or their coop, they can go off to do whatever and will come back to you.

>grouse
Never seen a live one, lol. Just one my uncle's friend shot. Or maybe that was a pheasant. Lemme look up how to say grouse.

>turkey
Never seen a wild one, live or otherwise but I've seen videos of those fuckers bolting into trees.

I've had one quail die from a lodged egg. The rest all survived bird flu. I had a rat break into the cage and several corn snakes. Other than that, very easy/healthy birds.

I've got about 13 hens and a rooster and 5 chicks being reared by two mama hens right now. Even with one gone broody and two hens raising we have wayyy too many eggs for me and my wife to eat. We have in the past culled a few roosters that got reared up by the hens but I tell you what, I don't like killing them. It makes me sad but that's how it goes on this bitch of an earth.

I have a very barky beagle who keeps things out of the yard we have our chickens in. Since we have adopted this system we have had no losses to predators, god bless us. I try to have a good bit of shrubbery and the like for them to hide from aerial predators. I think having a rooster helps too as he is always on the look for birds. He is kindof on a hair trigger in that he sounds an alarm over obviously nonthreatening birds (cat birds, bluejays) but even so we have been very fortunate indeed after losing several before we found a system that worked for us.

A mama duck inexplicably decided to nest at my local Home Depot one year among the hay bales. I like ducks, too, but that hissy cunt made shopping for plants and fertiliser and soil and shit a pain in the dick for the duration of her stay.
No idea why the store didn't just get rid of her. Besides the fact that there are plenty of murdercones at Home Depot they could have used, they could simply move her and her nest away from the goddamn store.

Yea, they have different chests. Much more prominent in the common coturnix pattern. Impossible with some of the patterns though. Bobwhite quail, which is the 2nd most common quail for keeping, have completey different male and female looks, like a lot of other birds.

I knew girl back in the day, Martha (yes, really) who kept several uncommon pets, among which were a skunk, a nanny goat named Elliot, a llama (or alpaca? I forget which; I always called it the one and she always corrected me that it was the other), several song birds in an ENORMOUS enclosure built into a living room window frame with one-way glass on it (so the birds and family can see out, but passersby can't see in) and, after someone in the house got licensed for falconry, an owl of some sort. It spent a lot of time chained to a perch with a sandpit under it to catch its shit and the bonepellets it would spit out. Seemed fine, I guess, but it always made me a bit sad since owls are migratory. Would've been better were it a peregrine as many these days have stopped migrating, presumably due to year-round food sources in urban areas in he form of pigeons, sparrows and other birds.
But what do I know? The tiny owl seemed generally happy and unexpectedly welcomed petting, preening and even hugs and (ick) kisses from Martha. They'd put on the glove and let it out for a flight and hunt and it always came back so if that's not a sign of a happy little killer, idk what is.
If anyone wants to try to figure out what sort of owl it was, all I can say is that it was small, it was brown and the thing fucking meowed. idk wtf sort of owl does that but maybe someone here might.

Building a nice large main coop for around 30 chickens but I was thinking of separating the run in 2 parts with a gate between and putting a smaller coop like one of those raised ones in one side. I'd put breeding chickens or chicks in the separate area until they are big enough to go in with the adults and I can just open the gate for extra run space. I only plan on burying some wire for run security, but the main coop has wire and concrete around. Would that plus the smaller coop be sufficient in keeping foxes out? I've had bits of other people's chickens and rabbits already left on my property last year so I have to be vigilant.

Also, I wanted to put a fan in for extra airflow since I live in FL. I was thinking of using a solar powered one, but I don't know if they work well. I have some thin ventilation openings on the bottom and top of the coop and am going to put in a few larger windows appropriately far away from the roosting areas. Anyone have experience with solar devices? Are the shit or reasonably reliable?
