Sorry anon I forgot to post.

Well basically I made 60 grams cold brew + 60 grams cold water with ice cubes and drank it. Wasn’t impressed but it’s my fault for using pre ground moka coffee with part of robusta in the blend.

Next time I’ll try again with a specialty and medium grind.

Cold Hebrew using Alan Adler’s Aeropress recipe but with a Jewish twist.

Original recipe was 15 gr beans, 65 gr cold water and stirring for 1 minute.

My recipe is 15 gr beans, 130 gr cold water and stirring for 1 minute.

Why doubling the water dose? Because I want to drink multiple coffees per day so I use the Italian 7 grams of coffee rule for the espresso, therefore 15 grams of beans are for 2 people.

I have resulting 110 grams of concentrate which I will put into 2 cups (55 grams each) and dilute with another 55 grams of water/milk.

I'm so demoralized

My espresso pucks keep exploding. When I pull them out of the machine there's an imprint of the shower screen with a low dose, I feel the puck and its squishy and the top rocks like it's in two seperate layers, when I bang it out gently, half of it is still left behind and stuck to the basket.

I can grind coarser and stop it but the espresso shoots out really fast, like 15 seconds or less. Trying to get into normal espresso time and syrupy appearance explodes every time.

I use a gaggia classic. I let out all the steam before each shot and I've modded it to 6.5 bar OPV. The OPV valve looks like its squirting normally. I don't use a puck screen or paper filters. I've ordered one.

First I thought it was CO2 is my new beans but cheap amazon coffee is doing it too.

I use a mignon filtro with espresso burrs.

Before this I had a shot that choked to shit and didn't explode and it was the best shot I ever pulled. Now I can't even choke the machine out at any grind setting.

Buckman once said grinders with bimodal distribution and more fines like conical burrs have better puck integrity. But I want to solve this without buying a different grinder.

That style of screen is a shitty thick mesh heatsink. You're a year behind. Grab a thin disc style one from aliexpress or sworks. Single layer of holes so they wipe/rinse clean and you can see any blockage. I think mhw3bomber has one now. Sworks seems overpriced at $15 for a two pack, but I paid flair $35 for that one and normcore like $20. The only reason I paid flair was they were the only other ones selling them at the time besides the bplus screen at $50.

Pullmans are great. It sounds like your grinder is just fucked up or your adjustment screw isn't acting consistent. Maybe look at a full cleaning and try to align it a little better? What do you mean by exploding puck? You're not going to be able to diagnose a shot off whether or not it sticks to your basket.

>> No.19399986

I've pulled 9 bar before. I've also pulled good tasting 6.5 bar before my current problem. There's all kinds of espresso advice out there, a lot of its contradictory and it can't all be right, and I question the most knowledgeable people in the hobby. I didn't chide you earlier for misreading, that was other anon. But if you're going to insist on something I'd appreciate if you could explain WHY you think one choice is better than another. 9 bar is normal, but espresso is also normally bad tasting. I know my pucks are exploding, with the underlying force behind that being water pressure, so I don't intuitively see how more of it will help. There's a reason coarser grinds with less puck resistance don't explode. There's a reason filter coffee doesn't explode.

I've explained what I know in my first post. Even low doses that I've seen stay in place with water on top are imprinting on the top of the shower screen and floating on water after it's all done. Also the shots taste unbelievably terrible, much worse than my coarser grinds.

Grind size and pressure are just two parameters to adjust how quickly water flows through the puck, and since you want creamy body you shouldnt grind too coarse. Thats why I advised raising the pressure. But if you already pull decent shots at higher pressure and dont like them go crazy and experiment by all means. I do think its a bit condecending to say something tastes objectively bad just because you dont like it though

>What do you mean by exploding puck?

Thought I'd draw it. To the best I can tell this is what's going on on the left. When you press it, it's like it rocks around like a soft boat and is unusually squishy. The right is also soft but if you press a little harder you can feel foundation under it. The left also has a shower screen imprint where it would be hitting the top in the process of the explosion. The shape of crack underneath can be anything obviously, it's just an example. The puck may be in more than two pieces. The bottom sticks to the basket very well and doesn't come out with the top. The normal shots on the right come out in one piece.

I've had a puck screen before but stopped using it because I bent it and I suspect the mesh was too fine and not so transparent to water, especially when dirty. I wanted to remove it as a variable to channeling. But it was good at giving you a dry puck at the end to examine. That's why I ordered another one.

>> No.19400057

>>19400027
There could be a way you are right. I could suppose if you have a higher peak pressure, you don't have to grind as fine to get the same resistance, and maybe grinding too fine contributes to the explosions. It's definately cheaper to try different opv springs that a different grinder.

The only way I see the left happening is poor distribution/tamping. I'm wondering how much you'd benefit from a simple dimmer mod to give you some slower controlled preinfusion. Let the puck fully hydrate slowly before the 6.5bar ramp.

>> No.19400185

>>19400088
Yeah it's not weird to say more pressure can get through finer coffee, but more pressure also squeezes coffee harder so maybe you can grind coarser and come out with the same syrup.

I either have to make water move more gently, make my puck stronger, or make it easier for the water to move through the coffee. I still don't know why that miracle shot worked at all

I have this weird thing of mine, I don't know if I should call it a fetish because it ain't nothing sexual to it, but still it turns me on somewhat.

So, I wear plastic slippers all year long but now that it's summer I don't wear it with socks, I have my feet naked like God intended.

With the heat and temperatures rising, given the non-breathable material, my feet inside the slippers sweat and become moist between the fingers.

When I remove the feet from the slippers, the sweaty footprint on the internal surface of the slippers release its characteristic acidic, almost vinegary, pungent smell in the air up to my nostrills.

When I make coffee in the morning I like to sit on the chair and cross my legs, feet outside the slippers, and as I sip the coffee the strong smell of feet sweat accompanies me during the coffee tasting, thus adding an extra aroma that I can feel with the nose.

It's weird because I'm both disgusted and aroused by this, but I can't help but sniffing it.

im pretty sure it wasnt out when i was buying my rok
also
its over double the price
also
hoffmann didnt cover it
also at the time of the original "manual grinder comparison chart" debate im 99.99% sure not a single person brought it up
also
im pretty sure you have only talked about it a couple times THIS YEAR
so no, not ALL THE TIME
cunt.
and even if hoffmann did cover it and it was out at the time i was looking for a grinder i still probably would not have bought it because again the price.
pietro = $690aud
rok = $250aud
the pietro is $440 more expensive.
and for someone buying their first grinder i wasn't going to go "all in" on something i didnt even know i was going to enjoy doing.
the rok came in at just the right price.
(also the rok has a much better base and much longer crank shaft)

Why are coffees like Folgers and other super market beans so fucking bad? Like why are they just so shit in terms of flavor, etc? Is it just because they roast the fuck out of the beans until they are nearly flavorless and dark? I have a present day Bialetti and it’s trash.

The materials are ok but the fit and finish is reminiscent of 90s Chinese products, with sharp edges, impurities and the molten aluminium is full of imperfections, plus on top of everything it’s made of aluminium and costs more than other non meme moka pots.

I would’ve bought the E&B if I could travel back in time, but then again

>lolaluminium

and since I don’t want Alzheimer’s then I’d still have switched to Chad Stainless Steel.

The Giannina is the best moka pot I’ve ever seen when it comes to fit and finish, it’s heavy as fuck and sturdy, you can see where your money is going (10 years warranty means that the pot will probably outlive you), the coffee it makes is pretty consistent and good because these last months I kept switching between specialty coffees and so, I’m happy with it.

Sadly something has gone wrong with it but it will be fixed.
I’m unlucky in life, I even had problems with Lexus cars which supposedly are bullet proof.

Bros, I need some advice.
A couple of months ago, I forgot to empty my moka pot before going on holiday and it got moldy. I scrubbed the shit out of it using dish soap (later learned you're not supposed to do that), blasted water through it and then let it sit in hot water for hours before rinsing and later putting it in hot water again. Finally, I boiled some water in it a couple of times, but in the end I wasn't brave enough to use it.
Today I looked at it again and there's no glaring issues. The filter still has a very faint coffee smell, but no mold smells anywhere.
Is this thing a health hazard? What I'm mainly worried about is that since I couldn't directly scrub the inside of the funnel, it could still have some nasty crap inside.

Checked.

If you boiled the shit out of it then you’re fine, just be sure that the gasket is clean and if it has mold throw it away and put in a new one.

Also if you’re autistic you may already want to descale the pot so the acidic vinegar disinfect the pot too.

>3 tbsp of white vinegar in the boiler
>fill with hot tap water and cover the valve too
>mix and leave it resting for at least 2 hours
>discard the excess water so that the level goes under the valve
>assemble the moka with funnel etc but not coffee
>keep the lid closed (do not open it because it’s dangerous when there isn’t coffee to provide resistance) and brew a coffee like you would normally do, turn off the stove when all the vinegar solution has been expelled (judge by ear DO NOT OPEN the lid unless you want to be hit by boiling water)
>let the pot sit and when the solution has cooled down throw it in the sink and rinse the pot under the water
>brew one coffee (use coffee this time) and throw it away

Done

Ps. I didn’t read that you scraped the moka pot.

Unless you used abrasive shit it should be fine if you boiled it and washed it multiple time, you need to make another layer of oxide form on the aluminium surface to protect the pot.

With that said, this is the reason why I went stainless steel. I don’t want to deal with this shit and the concerns.

Today I started the Caffelab Colombia San Alberto, I just made a quick Aeropresso after dinner just to test it.

The smell is amazing, just by opening the canister you can smell a fruit juice like aroma, very sweet and lowly acidic too.

In the cup the sweet fruit is still there and very cool, low acidity and mild body (but then again paper filters…), also a nice quick chokky/nutty finish.

Will driver the picture tomorrow when I make a cup of moka out of it.

Mango probably, and I can feel peach too even if it’s not a tropical fruit.

Tomorrow I’ll try again.

The Mokaflor Bernini has been finished
today, it was a decent blend but it lacked depth in the “dark” department, it was more on the aromatic side than on the chokky and caramel side. I’d rate it 7.5/10 if drank plain and 8/10 with milk because this way it tasted like caramel.

Something something tells me that if I want a true Italian blend I need to try something with some - may god forgive me for uttering this word - robusta, but then again my boy 100% Arabica from torrefazione Continental hasn’t any and tastes like true Italian goffee.

based beverage enjoyer
yeh it is interesting how just a small amount of milk can really make coffee taste entirely different sometimes
and other times make it taste worse.

Way uglier, but unironically a way better design/workflow for actual cafe use.

surprised weber didnt make some like $3000 machine that you put your portafilter into and then automatically does the wdt
honestly the moonraker seems like a stepping stone in that direction.
like if you think about it in these higher end cafes they have a puck prep line all of which are automatic tool/technique machines.
i can see a sleek weber machine slotting into that line nicely
also, weber espresso machine when?
they have to run out of coffee prep/ grinders eventually right?
i guess they dont have a rdt product yet.

nah, its not quite there yet and weird to generalize from tea. their coffee industry needs time to develop, but it is infinitely better compared to the commodity garbage they churn out for domestic consumption. i bought some of those for cheeeap long time ago when i wanted to learn roasting, and it was thoroughly mediocre (barely cheaper than columbian supremo but quite a bit worse). historically their planted variety is not the best, and the special fermentation can turn out funky as hell. it can yield strong flavor but usually lack complexity, like a strong fruit or fermenty like a wine. I've tried quite a few and only end up liking one, normally i wouldn't care to keep trying, but the price is not cheap either.

FUCK THE MOKA POT

Fuck this disgraceful bitter piss maker.

There is not a single time it made remotely good coffee and I've tried everything.
-pre-boil
-low flame
-put in on a stove
-remove early and cool with cold water

Adjusting variables like flame power, brew time, coffee amount, doesn't even produce different results.
It's consistent 100% disgusting metallic rancid shit.
