I haven't been back to Japan since the pandemic, but that kind of dreamlike 80s-90s limelight of unrestrained optimism and boom time just didn't seem to be present anymore outside of a few neighborhoods in Tokyo... which didn't seem fundamentally different to what you can get in Chicago, LA, NYC, etc.

I mean yes, the conbini and donki are open 24/7... like the gas station and walmart in my >10000 town in bumfuck nowhere is. The latter are obviously shittier in quality (and I'm an ALDI guy), but that is where the cultural difference actually plays in. But considering how cheap and low-stress life is here with a decent career, having slightly nicer services open all the time isn't really a big draw. Especially in the age of delivery (as long as that lasts).
