i suppose you could re-use a smaller amount of water and wash in batches. dirt and sediment should sink to the bottom. it would be a pain in the butt but if you really want to conserve a quart or two of water i guess

>cut around the core with a pairing knife and remove it
>separate the salad leaves
>fill a sink or a large bowl with fresh cold water
>submerge the leaves in water and gently move them with your fingers
>drain and eventually repeat, especially if it's particularly dirty
>remove the leaves from the water with your hands and drop them off in a salad spinner
>spin that motherfucker until the salad is reasonably dry
you can do everything in the salad spinner if it's big enough and the salad is not too much

>spin if you have a spinner, just lay out on a clean towel otherwise.
