I just learned that I can buy 50 pounds of rice for 40 dollars. Its starting to make sense why China and India have billions of people. The cost of their food is NOTHING. So that made me think that I will start to eat like a chinese or indian. Essentially the only meals I have really got planned are

>spam and rice with an egg on top
>curry and rice
>slow cooked spicy pork with rice

Any other good suggestions in this vein? Essentially just want to eat a lot rice and pig so that I am spending like 1 dollar or two per meal. Im not interested in anything that is too hard to prepare either.

Congratulations on learning dried goods are cheap. Cornmeal, beans, lentils, flour and various other grains are also very cheap when purchased in bulk. There's no reason to only eat rice to save money.

Unfortunately not very cheap, when considering calories and nutrition obtained compared to dollars spent, unless you find tomatoes for cheap or grow your own. Mayo is better too. I love tomato sandwiches.

I'm Chinese
I eat a lot of Indian food and probably way too much rice
Best value rice dishes to make yourself is chicken biryani, in general I think Indian food does chicken the best
I don't like white cut chicken or hainanese chicken rice all that much honestly, fatty pork is great
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJUdcbCoIcA
I use this recipe and it works every time
If you can grow your own mint and coriander it becomes even cheaper
If you decide to cook Indian food then you will have to invest in spices but if you go to an Indian grocery they can be cheap in bulk
There is also chana masala which is easy to make
I also make this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cv5IuUimvQ
But I use chicken instead most of the time because it's cheaper
Another thing I make often is plov
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeA39PDtU4k
Like this recipe although I think it's far better with lamb

Most asians are that short because they don't even get much protein quantity.
Protein quantity leads to increased height, protein quality increases muscle strength and growth. Most of those guys have neither. The Americanized Asian guys can be like 5'10 because they have more meat regularly.

The trick is basically limiting meat intake and buying in bulk and knowing 100 ways to cook chicken, beans and rice. Buying end cut bacon for $3/lb, then using the equivalent of a slice or two of bacon to flavor an entire pot of beans, lentils or soup. Cheap meats that will flavor large batches of stuff. Neckbones, smoked jowl, etc.

I basically don't buy any meat that isn't less than $2 per lb, except bacon. The bacon I buy is cheap end cut pieces and runs about $3/lb. Chicken can be found for $1/lb all the time. It's all about buying in bulk and on sale, and being smart about what you cook. Picrel is split pea soup with bacon, with some cheap Walmart bakery bread that was about to expire and marked down to .60c.

Of course you can't start from absolute zero and expect to only spend $40. Some times you'll find meat on sale and buy $50 worth to stock up for 3 months, and the next month you'll only need to purchase dry goods and butter and end up spending $20. Sometimes you're going to run out of vanilla extract or something and that ends up being a quarter of your monthly budget. Think about the cost per serving, and average monthly expenditure instead of initial purchase price. Spending $30 in one go on a 50lb bag of rice feels like a big expense when you're dirt poor, but you have to remember that's almost a years worth of rice and will save you substantially in the long run.

Changing habits is a must, too. You drink soda? Not anymore.. tea or Kool aid. You eat a bag of chips every weekend? Nah, you're a popcorn popper now.
