If you hold your forks or spoons with a shovel grip like the right pic, then you are subhuman garbage.

I hold it like this and I assumed everybody else did as well. This position allows for the easiest switch from "tines-up position" for scooping to "tines-down position" for poking or holding, and a simple inward scoop of the wrist brings the food to the mouth.

CMV: The overhand fork grip, or "shovel" grip, is the SUPERIOR way to hold a fork

I have been using this grip since I was a child and, despite being chastised at the dinner table, see no reason to change. Not only this, I see it as the superior way to hold a fork. This is because the overhand grip is more firm, and allows you apply much more force with the fork. This has a few benefits. One, it makes it easier to pick up tough foods like raw vegetables. Second, it makes the fork a more effective weapon should someone attempt to assault you or someone near you while eating. I realize this does not happen very often, but it could possibly save a life. And lastly, when you wish to cut something with the side of the fork you do not have to change grips, and so it is more efficient.

The only benefit of the standard grip, as far as I can tell, is that it is more socially acceptable. However, I reject this as a valid reason for using the grip as I strongly believe that utility and function should always be chosen over conformity and form. Change my view!

Note: from this stance can be differentiated from the stance on the right by
>the position of the thumb (above the fork as opposed to below)
>orientation of the handle of the utensil relative to the line of the knuckles
and differentiated from the stance on the left by
>The index finger being held below the handle of the fork rather than above
>The thumb being parallel to the handle of the fork rather than intersecting it
>not looking like a flaming faggot

Pic related is how I hold it, it looks nice but also holding fork and knife this way makes it a lot easier to cut/slice food with the knife.

I only see fat people use the shovel grip, for maximum efficiency. The people who hardly chew their food before swallowing, or take another bite before they finish chewing, because maximizing intake is all they care about.

USA! USA! USA!
We used to give my friend shit because if he was eating a steak, he would cut it all into pieces to avoid the switch of fork and knife.
But now I realize he is right.
If a food cannot be eaten with chopsticks, it isn't prepared correctly.
I shouldn't have to cut my own steak, the chef who prepared it should prepare it in edible portions already.

Apparently, the intended way to eat peas when using a fork continental style, is to mash the peas onto the back of the fork with your knife.
