Sure, I've tried the Saemidori so far. It's the first fukamushi I've had, so I still need to minmax my brewing, I over brewed it a bit.
Anyway, it's very thick and cloudy, with strong umami and sweetness and less astringency than most sencha I've had. It has a spinach-like quality to it and some grassiness. I'm not blown away by it so far, but it's very "moreish" and not bad value for the money I think. Will try to experiment with the brewing to maybe get some more fruity notes out of it. Any ideas for that?

rolled into needles, but with some loose particles because the deep steaming of fukamushi sencha breaks some of the leaves apart from what I understand. that's also why it's so cloudy and thicc, it's full of fine leaf matter

>Spring harvested tea leaves from Ning'er county of Simao. This has been picked as 1 leaf to 1 bud sets and processed carefully by rolling the tea into pellets. Like most Yunnan black teas, the tea benefits from short-term aging and develops a malty sweet taste and lovely fragrance with a hint of chocolate and flowers.
Does that mean it tastes similar to assam but with more flavor (chocolate and flowers)? I'm pretty new to loose leaf tea that isn't years old from a supermarket.

thai tea is good too and pretty similar to masala chai though usually served cold.
tibetan black tea with milk and butter, which is usually made frothy. i havent tried the authentic leaves or yak milk, but adding butter is at least a step up from black tea with milk.

i prefer doing my own spice mix for tea. the exception is thai tea despite the mix having food coloring because i don't normally have vanilla or ceylon black tea leaves.

Been comparing these two gaiwans in terms of pouring.

The one on the right pours significantly better than the one on the left. This is due to 2 main reasons.

First, the gaiwan on the right has a steeper curve to it, which gives better velocity of water to pour out.

The left gaiwan has a more traditional shape, where there are more curves that interrupt the flow of water. The left gaiwan is also about twice as thick, causing the water to pour around the lip and down the sides causing a mess.

Just wanted to share this with you guys in case you plan on buying a gaiwan soon. The shape makes a HUGE difference when pouring.

Yeah, its an unfortunate combo of shop owners who don't know better/dont want to pay up for good tea and Chinese cultural attitudes, people want to buy a tea but don't want to pay the price Chinese will happily sell them something cheap and tell them its whatever they want to hear. "maocha" broadly refers to tea that has been mostly finished but is still not quite done being processed (often referring to the tea right before the final grading and sorting step or before a traditionally roasted tea is roasted). In the context of puerh the term "maocha" is often used to describe tea that has been fully processed but has not been pressed into a cake and is therefore "unfinished" in a sense.

It's also worth noting that the 7542 commands a premium because it is "the classic." It's a benchmark for sheng puerh taste, not price.
>if not factory, then what?
In this context, a factory tea is one produced by one of the largest tea operations in Yunnan. Most notably, DaYi, Xiaguan, and CNNP but there are many others. Most of these factories have multiple names names, which makes learning them a little confusing.
Teas from these established factories are generally safe in terms of quality and the logical place to start a puerh journey, although the usual retailers discussed here have their own recipes that are also a good start.
There are smaller farms, villages, or co-ops you can sometimes buy from. You might think of them as "indie" operations. They do have tea processing facilities that are called factories, but you generally wouldn't refer to their output as factory tea.

>> No.19288640

>>19288426
Factory tea often refers as much to the style of tea than whether or not it was literally made in a big factory. Factory teas are typically in the style of production that were dominant when the puerh industry was still state owned. Dayi's and Xiaguan's numbered recipes (like the dayi 7542 cake) are a prime examples. This contrasts with framer made teas or the many small often boutique puerh producers that have opened up after privatization.

>>19288554
Some other ways to look at the distinction is that factory tea is often blended vs single origin teas. The big factories often own plantations but still buy additional tea from elsewhere. Additionally many (but not all) factory teas use slightly chopped up leaves and many (but again not all) classic factory productions are geared toward aging and can be a bit rough when young. The stereotypes hold less true these days than it used to with many of the big name factories producing boutique single origin teas of their own.

It's so hard not to buy tea from Amazon, considering Prime is free shipping.

The issue is that almost all the teas on Amazon are mid-grade at best. Meanwhile Yunnan Sourcing has incredible selection, but cost of shipping for every order? It's a $6 tax for every order. Kinda sickens me.

Generally you would leave it on the stove all day and mix with freshly boiled water to make new cups to drink. If you wanted to store it, strain the leaves out and put in in some jars or other bottles with lids in the fridge. I suppose it would make a potent iced tea contrate, fill a glass with ice. Pour that tea concentrate over, then ideally add some sweetened condensed milk.
Its a very rustic way if brewing tea and its in the pastebin because people ask about it occasionally and we had some guy show up and tell us how to brew it. Best with cheap tea that comes in big boxes.

I know you're technically correct and I was being somewhat facetious, but there's a point with boveda packs that you can't wait for them to refresh by cranking the humidity. The sealed container method will prevent your packs from becoming oversaturated beyond their rating, but it honestly takes three times longer than submersing. If you keep an eye on the size of the packs as you're recharging them, submerging them directly in water is not a problem if you've been using them long enough to know when to pull them out.
At worse, you should only be recharging half of your boveda packs such that if you slightly overcharge them, your emptier packs will be able to absorb the excess humidity as your over-charged packs emit it. Maybe you need to open your humidor once or twice over a week to make sure it's balanced.

brief comparison of two ripes, because I don't usually drink two on the same day, one after the other. maybe someone will find it useful. both from KTM:
>Dayi Lao Cha Tou (2014)
amazing body, very thick. the taste is rather simple but satisfying, chocolate and cream. a hint of raspberry fruitiness in some brews, a hint of dough in others. it goes on for a long time, I must have gotten like 10-15 cups from it by the end
>Haiwan 9978 (2018)
body is nowhere near as thick, but fine enough. I find the taste a bit more complex and quite delicious. it reminds me of burnt caramel or brown sugar, but also has a nice fruitiness. the aroma smells like some type of fruit cake, which I like a lot and it is nicer than the aroma on the Dayi. the lasting power, however, can't compete with the Lao Cha Tou, I get maybe 5 brews out of it using a similar amount of material

very happy with both these purchases, especially the Haiwan cake
