19258439 No.19258439 [Reply] [Original]

I saw this "taco truck" on a daytime show and I have two questions:

1. These tacos appear to be made in the American style, with lettuce, shredded cheese, hard shells etc., but this is a British daytime show. Is the American style of tacos the default over there?

2. Would you use this taco truck?

I don't buy food I can make
Buying food is an act of humiliation, you buy food to remind yourself that no matter how hard you have practiced there are people who can make things you can't make yourself
I have failed to make croissants 5 times, I got pretty close, I would say 80% there but the dough always breaks even a little when I fold and knead so I still buy criossant

Am american, but most people seem to prefer tacos dorado or the crispy shell tacos. The ones that actually deep fried and super crispy are amazing. The ones that are just big tortilla strips baked into a taco shape are okay because they're crunchy but I just do not like soft shell flower or corn tortillas for tacos. I don't care if its not authentic.

2. No, I've never understood spending money on something that does 1 extra-specific task. It basically just holds the taco while you fill it with meat and whatever. As opposed to your hand? It also helps keep the filling inside the taco and falling over but... You pick the thing up and some will fall out anyway as you eat.

They're dumb little gimmicks but I guess they can be "fun" for kids or idiots.

Bong here. Yes. Soft tacos have only really been known over here for the last ten years or so. Prior to that, the only place most people would see a taco is in an Old El Paso meal kit.
Mexican (until quite recently) was not an established restaurant type and the only exposure to it would be through weird third-hand tex mex stuff.
Soft tacos are obviously better than hard, but I don't really understand the appear compared to a more enveloping wrap style. Give me a proper fajita any day.

That blows me away. I sort of assumed that, by this time, all the cuisines that had penetrated the US would have done so in the UK as well. But then, you're way ahead of us on Indian food from what I've heard.

Yes. Their default is typically an shittier version of what is already our worst example of a dish. Why do you think they say so much nonsense about Americans not eating well? It's literally Subway, McDonalds, or the worst redneck taco night tacos like in the OP pic.

Someone even made a thread earlier trying to say that Americans don't eat mushrooms. It's really bizarre how sheltered these people are.

Hard shells are an American invention. Hard shell tacos are not Mexican food. Hard shell tacos are American food.

Having said that, most people eat soft tacos, irrespective of their own ethnicity. But I live in a large city. I imagine a family from Lansing, Michigan would purchase a hard shell taco kit from the grocery store for taco night.

>I don't buy food I can make
I don't have the luxury of half the tools and appliances restaurants have or YouTube celebrity chefs. Not getting grease splatter all over my stovetop, by simply getting a double cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce and sauce is definitely worth it.

>Buying food is an act of humiliation, you buy food to remind yourself that no matter how hard you have practiced there are people who can make things you can't make yourself
Absolutely not. You can make it yourself, you just don't want to. When food was cheap before COVID, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot not getting free delivery chinese takeout. People forget that all these fees and tips, and taxes and price hikeups did not exist 10 years ago. Delivery was FREE over a certain amount. Five Guys was like 8$ for burger and fries. McDonald's had a dollar menu.

Now I'm less inclined to buy food unless it's extremely good because fast food is the same price as normal food and delivery costs way too much.

I also personally prefer to bake. Easier to clean, more relaxing and so many dessert recipes. But will you catch me frying at home? Rarely, I don't want all that oil lying around

Until recently, pic related made exactly as the box instructs.
There's been a tex-mex place in the city I live since the late 80s until the pandemic called Dig In The Ribs. I am given to understand from my early visits that the menu usually had the "classics" e.g. ribs, burritos, hard tacos, fajitas, and burgers. Nothing that was difficult to get ahold of over here was included. For a long time no guacamole, never any tomatillos, no authentic cheeses (cheddar used instead), chili powder instead of chipotle or adobo, only bell peppers and jalapeños, etc etc.
It was a novelty place, and now we have places like La Choza, Carlito Burrito, where the food is actually legitimate. Even chains like Las Iguanas and Wahaca are attempting to actually make an effort to be "real."
Also, I've noticed the average Mexican food sold here is nearly spiceless but there will also be colon crippling spicy options available. Don't know if the US is like that.

Mexican food is uncommon in the UK. I live in London and it's infested with stinky kebab places on every corner and shitty chicken shops that all offer the same garbage. I don't think I have ever seen a mexican takeaway shop

Why would it? We have absolutely no connection with Mexico. For you it's your neighbour and you have tens of millions of them in your country, for us it's just some random place on the other side of the planet. Most of us have never interacted with a Mexican in any form. Mexico is as relevant to us as somewhere like Venezuela or Nepal.
