Why didn't savory pies catch on in North America? Besides chicken pot pie and tourtiere I can't think of any.

I would honestly trade the hamburger as a meal you can get everywhere with a nice meat pie
Anyone can make a burger at home, it's easy and I can make a pretty good burger in less than 5 minutes if I really want to rush myself for whatever reason (normally more like 6-10 minutes).

australian pasties have a mix of beef and veggies

also, i'm just reading this now:
>In 2001, a small American grocery and caterer in Gaylord, Michigan, Albie's Food, Inc., was sent a cease and desist letter from another US-based food company, The J.M. Smucker Company, accusing Albie's of violating their intellectual property rights to the "sealed crustless sandwich". Instead of capitulating, Albie's took the case to federal court, noting in their filings a pocket sandwich with crimped edges and no crust was called a "pasty" and had been a popular dish in northern Michigan since the nineteenth century.[citation needed] The Federal Court determined that Albie's Foods did not infringe on J.M. Smucker's intellectual property rights and was allowed to continue.[55]

So from what I gather, beef patties in Jamaica are derived from the pasty. Jamaica was British occupied for decades so a lot of cuisine was shaped around serving english tastes just like in india. So they probably made them to be similar to a pasty with whatever they had closest in ingredients

They're heavily seasoned with aromatic spices, alliums and peppers. There's ginger, scotch bonnet (fruity and smoky), allspice, thyme, beef broth, and breadcrumbs to make it kinda moist and pasty. Insanely delicious, if you can find the brand in pic related, definitely pick one up, and imagine how much better they can be when fresh. It's unlike any other cuisine in terms of flavor, if you're imagining Indian or other cumin-ey profiles you're way off. It's just "tropical".

I had heard that a good pasty could fall down a mine shaft and not break. Men would bring them in the morning, and the filling should still be hot come lunch time. The pastry crust wouldn't necessarily be eaten, it was expected to get dirty, it was just a way to transport the meat and potatoes and keep em hot. Evidence of pasties being eaten in Cornwall mines date back to the Iron Age, although of course without the potato.

As an Australian in America I have to admit I really miss these little fuckers.

The most nostalgic taste sensation is getting one of those horrific flash frozen 3.49 pies from out of the mini oven at a service station at 3 in the morning. The sheer staleness of the pastry mixed in with the shit like consistency of the nasty and cheap meat ... all salvaged by a couple of sauce packets, the kind you have to crack open by bending them in the middle.

Sauce going fucking everywhere.

The aftertaste of liquid shit and hyper processed tomato lingering for an hour.

The explosive molten shits

An Australian staple.

>he orders two fresh ones to-go
>asks the cashier if they have ketchup packets
>"yeah... are... you going to suck the ketchup packet while eating the pasty and driving?"
>there's only one answer to that question

That's probably also the exact same way that Greggs or any other chain bakers does it, the only difference is that it'll be in America so somebody'll film it and then all the Bongs will be outraged over Americans disrespecting the noble art of Greggs despite doing the exact same thing we do over here.
>>19226684
It really depends on the caliber of pie, if you're getting it from a chain bakery or chippy then it's effectively McDonalds-tier but if you got it from a nice farm shop then it's likely pretty good. Supermarket stuff is trashy as owt but the quality depends on where you shop, one from Iceland is obviously a council estate classic but something from M&S would probably be decent enough.

Nah i mean, it is like the epitome of comfort food. It doesn't surprise me he liked them. Super savory, meaty, flaky crust delicious.

But that's the core of OP's question which is if they are such an easy hit then why haven't they been picked up in the U.S.

And you say "untapped market" but it's such a dead-simple thing it's not like some obscure niche item that's not known about.

Maybe a "hidden in plain site" sort of thing?

Our "red meat encased in bread" itch was scratched by the burger and other sandwiches, probably thanks in no small part to the fact the idea of eating a hot meat pie while it's 50F and drizzling is more appealing than eating a hot meat pie when it's 85F and the sun is trying its level best to cook you alive.

>chicken pot pie
I mean, you literally just pointed out that they did catch on. Chicken pot pie, steak pot pie, sausage and gravy pot pie, they're all savory pies and you can find them in any grocery store in the frozen section. Marie Calendar and Banquet make them. I'm assuming you mean you can't find them in restaurants, and that's likely because they take a long time to make and really aren't worth the effort most of the time. Very rarely is there a savory pie that tastes any different from the frozen shit or the pre mades you can find at Sam's Club.
