I bought a pack of diced beef, similar to pic related. The label says to pan fry it THEN oven cook for 2.5 hours. I looked online and it says the same thing. What the actual fuck?

If frying is enough for entire steaks, why would diced meat need more? I'm really confused about this. I don't want to give myself food poisoning. I also don't want to spend damn near 3 fucking hours to cook something I might not even like.

Please help.

ps. I know I'm going to sound like a retard but I don't usually eat beef and I have no idea how to cook it properly. I'm working on improving my diet by trying some new things.

Had meat before? It doesn't change flavor due to shape.

Because some cuts of beef like beef chuck need to be cooked for a lot longer because of the amount of connective tissue in the meat. It gets super tender with time. Usually this is done by boiling the meat or via an extended roast/braise.

What you bought was probably diced chuck. You can cook it the way you're describing if you want, but it'll be tough and chewy.

When I want beef but I can't make up my mind, I get some minced beef. You can make a bunch of different meals out of it. Including steak tartare.

because it's extra lean beef designed for adding to soups, stews, etc you retard, and thus needs extra time to soften the proteins

Beef tastes different depending on how its cooked. I didn't eat it for over 20 years because I didn't like the flavour but recently found that some varieties were fine.

I'm sensing that you aren't from around these parts. When did you crash land your ship on Earth, and where is it now?

its not for safety reasons. its because it has no fat and would be chewy and tough if you cooked it like a good steak. frying it is just for browning (better flavor). make sure not to crowd the pan or it won't brown correctly, miht want to do it in batches if youre cooking the whole pack. then you braise it in some liquid for some hours to tenderize it.

you fry it to get colour and flavour then cook it low and slow so it becomes tender. the cooking is not for safety it's so you're not chewing rubber.

Thanks everyone. I guess this is why it was so cheap (Steaks are really damn expensive). I was trying to save money. I doubt I'm going to enjoy a beefy stew because I don't like the beefy flavour, so I'll probably end up giving it away or something. Will not make this mistake again.

When you lightly fry steak, it doesn't even taste like beef, it's just meat. Beef cooked for a long time has a strong flavour.

This kind of meat is a tougher cut, and better for stews or slower, cooler cooking. If you do it like a steak it won't be as pleasant.

You can cook it in many ways, that's just one of them.
Letting it simmer on low heat or baking it for 1-2 hours just makes it more soft. Which is necessary because it's probably low quality meat that would be chewy otherwise.

You want to fry it on high heat first in order to create a browned outside layer with roast aromas, which seals in the moisture and flavors of the meat. Otherwise it will just fall apart and mix with the rest of the dish, which can be a desirable outcome too, depending on the recipe. But if you want the meat chunks to stay intact, then fry it first.
