Had a horrible experience with Goya sardines some time ago but someone convinced me to try them again so I bought another tin, this time in spicy oil since I can no longer find the kind in plain oil. Frankly I think that's because the kind in plain oil sucks but whatever, I'll see how these new ones taste after work.

Seems most deenz enjoyers are US / NA based so I'm always left a bit confused by the brands mentioned since we have none of these here.
Where I live we basically only have NURI sardines + other portuguese ones in the same style (Olive Oil, Spiced Olive Oil or Spicy Tomato sauce). Or the super cheap ones in rapeseed or sunflower seed oil without skin which I basically just use for cooking pasta sauces.
I like the NURI ones but in the past I could get them for as cheap as 2€ on sale but now I rarely see them under 3€ and their standard price of like 3,80€. There are also off-brand ones by the supermarket brands that are in the same style but those are also easily 1.5x the price they used to be. Used to get them for under 1,50€.

Any other EU-based anons got tips on European deenz meta? Honestly I shouldn't complain about the NURI price since I saw they go for around 5€ elsewhere but at the current price it's one of the most expensive things I can eat on bread. I can even get a decent chorizo or Spanish jamón for less. There are still the really inexpensive ones but those can't really be eaten by themselves. Anyone got deenz recipes? I've already eaten my fill of pasta with deenz in spicy tomato sauce and fisherman's eggs? In those the lower quality ones can be used pretty freely.

Even though Nuri is from Portugal it seems to be more of an American thing if that makes sense. My girlfriend is Portuguese and she'd never heard of Nuri, but she knew of Ortiz which is a Spanish luxury brand which seems to be quite common around Europe.

Honestly though I feel like buying luxury brands defeats the whole point, which is that deenz are meant to be cheap.

>> No.19100057

>>19100023
How much do you pay for deenz?
Here it's basically either garbage tier in sunflower / rapeseed oil for about 1€ or Nuri and similar style in spiced olive oil for about 3€ with not much in between. Yes, I get that Nuri is an overhyped export brand but the same style "off-brand" alternatives are not much cheaper and not quite as good.
Basically any other Portuguese brand is even more expensive because only specialty stores sell them while Nuri you can find in standard supermarkets.
On the internet I also haven't much in the way of alternatives. Which is why I wanted to know if other EU anons could recommend something.
I asked Portuguese friends and they mostly talked about fresh sardines, not really tinned fish in general. Makes sense if you live at the ocean there isn't much reason to eat tinned fish when the fresh ones are inexpensive and readily available. Friend did say he knew the city where Nuri comes from is known for canning industry. I looked into it and it seems Nuri is their export brand while the same cannery produces a different brand for domestic consumption. So take that as you will

I'm in England and I think we have a great deenz selection here. You can get a cheap tin in water/oil/tomato for about 40p like this: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/258574380.. Or you can get a nice tin of flavoured sprats for about £1: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/300601199.. This is usually my go-to everyday choice.

We do also get premium brands like King Oscar and Brunswick but I find they're no better than the supermarket's own premium selection but for double the price. If I really want to treat myself I get a tin of Ortiz tuna but it's usually like £3 minimum for a tin.

Obviously it's hard to give recommendations if you don't actually say what country you're living in. The options in Ireland are going to be completely different from the options in Latvia.

but their finest range is good or the cheaper ranges in other supermarkets, the waitrose own brand at 65p have been totally decent in my experience. and all the mackerel ones i've tried are pretty good usually around 80p.

What crackers does /deenz/ prefer? Nabisco may claim that their saltines are PREMIUM, but they're outclassed in virtually every way by these Suzie's brand saltines. Better flavor, better texture, and they come in individual packets of 10 crackers which is basically the perfect amount to me for one tin of deenz. Bonus, the individual packets fit perfectly in the cardboard box that a lot of deenz are shipped in, so you can take out the tin, and put the crackers in there to give them a little protection if they're in a backpack or something. It won't stop them from getting crushed, but it helps keep them from breaking apart too much.

Yup I am a bit of a deener myself, never participated in these threads. Yuro.

King Oscar is high quality but I dont prefer them. They are good but are just a bit too high end imo. Doesnt give that comfy deen feel. Olive oil is best, virgin olive oil type is better. The tomato one isnt good, I generally dont like tomato sardines.

The store brand deens are much better I feel, at least over here. According to the cans its the same fish and likely fished in the same areas. The fish themselves are larger, which I guess is considered lower quality, but I prefer larger pieces both for taste and consistency.

Lately Ive been trying out baltic sardines which they sell in some stores now for Ukranian refugees I guess. Really tasty, I recommend them. Cans are round and huge, with lots of of sardines in them HOWEVER the sardines are smoked which gives them a different taste. It took a few tries but now I honestly prefer the smoked taste. Ill get some pictures next time I buy these, I dont remember what the brand is called.

Bought some deenz at my local supermarket. The spiced ones by their own brand (clever) were pretty disappointing.
Compared to the standard Nuri / whatever Portuguese ones in spiced oil they were missing the bay leaf which was surprisingly noticeable.
The vegetables were also smaller. The oil was also not that flavorful and slightly bitter which is typical for lower quality olive oil.
Considering they aren't THAT much cheaper than the premium brands when they go on sale I think it's worth to pay extra in this case.
The brand mackerel was actually cheaper than this budget choice cause they had a 30% off deal.

Yes. I prefer the bones and the skins, and I prefer mine to be in a tin instead of the easy peel system they have. Also quality of Season deenz has gone downhill. They used to use EVOO. Now they use the cheapest gutter olive oil possible. It's also subhuman morrocans handling them in the sweltering heat. The more processed the Deen, the more humans that have touched it. If you subsist on these you're bound to get health issues.

You can at least cook it
If you like the tomato sauce one so much you can just mash them into pasta sauce and pretend it's a spaghetti

and a püack of these because apparently they just took some disorientated old man from the streets, glued a beard on his face and made him the deenz master. Havent tried either of them yet as my respect for both of the pictured gentleman is too big.

Higher-end deenz brands are always bigger than I'd like- KO gold in OO are easily my favorite. Any nicer offerings that are as small or even smaller?

Can someone explain how king Oscar is a higher end brand to me when everything they make is so cheap and shit tasting?

I didn't mean KO is high end, I mean "too big" is my problem with most high end deenz and I'd love to try something nicer than KO but around that size.

That's true, the smell can be pungent and lasting. I found that cooking my Fisherman's eggs in the oven as opposed to in a frying pan helps to reduce the odor. It doesn't linger as long either.
Thankfully my wife loves deenz too so when I cook with deenz she doesn't mind the smell

Ugh, that's disgusting. You are truly a devoted deenz lover, anon. I hope that doesn't happen to you again

There are some to be had, just look for cans that aren't labeled to have 4/5 etc.
In my experience with nicer canneries they will label the cans that have larger fish in them and offer a choice between smaller ones and bigger ones.

Miltons' Everything Multigrain. They're legit tasty enough to eat on their own, big enough for a few bites, stay together and just really compliment the fish well regardless of what exact fish it is.

that's a good idea, I'll try that next time.
