Can this shit even go bad? I presume not, its basically just vinegar, salt and peppers so I dont see how it can go bad, but still, I just found a bottle in my cupboard that expired in 2020. Its sealed, haven't opened it yet, but it had weird residues... I shaked it well and it looks good again, am I fine to eat it?

How the fuck are we supposed to know?
Do you think we manufactured that shit?

Mold. Moldy Tabasco is quite unlikely, but if you ever notice any furry action on the surface or near the cap, it’s time to open a new bottle.

Off smell. If your Tabasco stinks or smells “weird,” discard it.

Texture change. If the condiment is completely separated or the texture has drastically altered in any other way, it’s no good.

Bad taste. If everything about the sauce seems in perfect order, you can eat a bit (e.g., on a tortilla chip) to make sure. In almost all cases, the sauce will be fine. If it’s super old, it might taste a bit stale and lack some of that oomph, but that’s it.

As I said, its a sealed, unopened bottle so no mold whatsoever. I've actually eaten a lot of expired regular Tabasco, because I'm always stocked on them and always have bittle in the pantry fron like a few years ago, and its always good, but I was wondering if the green one would be different in that aspect

you're good, i found hot sauce in my parent's pantry from when i was in high school like 15 years ago, that shit is not good, you're fine

If it's the original red I'd say it's fine, but the green is a bit of a weird one due to the extra ingredients. Open it and give it a whiff and then a taste test. If it's fine and you feel normal after an hour, I'd say keep it.

It will oxidize over time and get pale and taste funny

That shit is basically survival shelter food, its good for decades, especially if still sealed. Not sure about the green one, if it has some extra ingredients that could probably go bad quicker, but I doubt it, you should be fine if it expired just in 2020 and is still sealed on top of that

PROTIP: in almost all cases (including meds, which you should remember to take,) expiration dates are just marketing. No food is expired until it's spoiled with bacteria to a point it's inedible. Best by dates are horseshit. Sell by dates are horseshit.

For some funsies, have a quick read: https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/drug-expiration-dates-do-they-mean-anything

Obviously, most shit you buy from the supermarket lasts way longer than they are allowed to claim by the law, just use common sense, and most importantly, your nose. Half of the factory made foods nowadays are so full preservatives and shit, that they can last you for week, months or even years after the stated expiration date, depending on the product. I remember having an opened bar of Nutella that I used for like year and a half, cos I'm not that big of a fan and that shit tasted exactly the same as freshly opened
Well, be cautious for shit like dairy and meat obviously, but in general, dont panick like a fucking soccer mom if something is slightly passed expiration date...

Interesting, I was never picky about eating "expired" food, but always was afraid to use old medicine, im lucky to really rarely get ill or use pills at all, so I always have a box of medicine which 90% of shit is probably from a decade ago, good to know.
I presume this won't be the case for stuff like antibiotics, but I won't be afraid to get a pull of ibuprofen it'll aspirin thats been sitting there for 5+ years next time I get a headache

It doesn't age in the bottle, the vinegar inhibits the fermentation process

I have a bottle of some carolina reaper hot sauce in my room thats been expired ateast since 2021and opened probably even a year earlier. Its too hot for most normal food, so I used it like 4-5 times a year tops, but it still as good as new.
No idea if the hotness of thr sauce actually matters, shit is too got even for bacteria
