Thinking about getting into the weeds on filter paper. I brew pretty much exclusively with a Hario Switch, recently with tabbed Hario papers (crinkly bags). Looking online, people seem to prefer the boxed Hario papers, and for third party like Sibarist, Origami and Abaca.

I've upgraded my grinder to a Kinu, buy good beans, and use filtered water. Is there something else I should focus on first before looking for potential gains in filter experimentation?

Once I dial in I get great coffee 90+ % of the time nowadays (and yes I preheat). Used to be much less consistent, but the better grinder made things more predictable. Current method of choice is water first, coffee on top, hard stir for forty seconds (with glass stirring rod), open switch, continue stir for ten more seconds, let it drain down. The hedonic treadmill is chugging onward though, and I feel if I can grab some more quality I might as well. Other potential avenues: mineralizing my filtered water, doing standard pour overs, testing water temperatures and grind sizes more systematically when dialing in, buying more beans at the same time for direct comparison and accepting throwing stuff out when it gets too old, etc.

It's not going to taste like a strawberry, it's going to taste like coffee. However, when you've drunk a lot of coffee, you begin to notice the differences, and if it has "strawberry notes" that means that in the range of coffee it's going to be sort of directionally strawberry-ish and fruity. Like it has a strawberry vector with the similar direction but low magnitude available to taste.

>K-cups
Immediate coffee is its selling point. I’ve never had a k-cup that was anything but utilitarian. Decent coffee right away.
D+
>coffee maker
Better tasting coffee and a lot of it. It’s not great but it’s good enough. Plus you can keep it hot throughout the day without microwaving or anything. Good option of you want a lot passable coffee over a long period of time.
B-
>pour over
These have been real popular in anime lately for some reason. It’s fun to use and flashy if you have guests over. You look like a maestro, an artist of the bean. It makes a surprisingly flavorful cup of coffee too. Theoretically it should be the same as the coffee maker but it’s a lot better somehow. Great taste, fun to make.
A
>French press
My undisputed favorite. It’s less complicated than the pour over but it makes the best, strongest tasting coffee of all. Plus the plunger is a stupid little fun thing to do. I highly recommend the French press.

You could then, if you up your game, upgrade to pic rel. What we in the know like to call the speter, you understand right? Not only does the shape remind us of a foil, the thing that helps us go from Macao to Dubai & co, but also the rapidity at wich we're able to produce a decent coffee. Heck some countries even began to call it eXpresso like france simply due to the need of speed from natural and legal stimulants.
With this upgrade you're not only upgrading a machine, you're also upgradeing status. This piece of art and time not only exists at any given time but also times the shots that appear almost like magic wich again complement the analogy of the need for speed. A fair and just price is asked in exchange of what simply constitutes a coffee maker.

Listen. Black coffee is superior. There is no argument to be had. If you drink black coffee, you dont have the moral problem of drinking milk, you dont get fat from the sugar, you get nice bitter coffee which just tastes better. Honestly, if you like coffee with milk (yeah those people exist), you dont like coffee, you like warm milk with some flavory stuff. You're not a real man. I used to be like you guys, drinking my coffee with milk and sugar. Every time someone offered me a coffee, I had to inconvenience them to go get milk and also put sugar in it. What a dick move. But they did it, because they were being nice. I used to be like that. One day I was welding shit together, grinding fresh welds to perfection, you know, manly man shit. I went to the kitchen to get coffee, but there was no milk. No sugar. No ground coffee. Just coffee beans. So I went to work, crushing up the beans and putting them in a cup, poured hot water over it, waited a bit (im no pussy but only psychopaths drink their coffee super hot), and drank it. It was disgusting. It was bitter. It was nothing like any coffee i'd had before. But that's when I realized that black coffee is much more than just coffee without milk. Its the real deal. Its a lifestyle. Its the feeling of purity, manliness, elegance, all in a hot cup. When someone offers me a coffee, I just say thanks. No milk. No sugar. Some are surprised, some ask again "are you sure?". Yes, yes, I am sure. I'm no pussy. I dont like warm milk. I like roasted bean juice and if it doesnt taste like roasted bean juice, its not coffee.

Absolutely. You cannot begin to make drinkable coffe without a grinder that costs at least 499£+shipping&tax.
When you rationally think about it from a logical point of view it makes absolute sense not only because some bri*ish salesman on youtube says so but also because it's more expensive which if you're in the know is a direct correlation with quality.
Me personally? Since switching to a Ditting grinder every. single. cuppa. from. ethiopia. tastes like a blueberry fruit bomb if i may say. Not having the coffee istead is a blessing that has it's price.

It's all relative. They weren't particularly popular in their original grinder (mazzer kony). If you want a high fines producing traditional set of Italian burrs, stick with the stock df64 italmills. If you find out you don't like them, you've got various other options to toss in. You can put the sworks flat conversion on a niche to open up your options slightly, but that's just throwing good money after bad.

So the bellman, stove top kettle, and a manual espresso machine will make sourcing water and dealing with scale easy. If your just pulling a couple shots a day then the workflow is fine. I'm a lazy bastard, so I ditched my hand grinder early on, so a really easy workflow.

Just anecdotally, dark roast is probably part of the problem. I've tried several different roasts, just to find out what I like, and the darker roast I had, I could not for the life of me get dialed in. 80%?
decaf isn't caffeine-free as is, but I'd imagine you would get 20% the caffeine of a normal coffee+80% of the caffeine from a decaf coffee, because caffeine is not that hard to extract. put another way, I don't think it would be different than if you brewed two brews, one with 20% the water and 20g caffeinated beans, and another with 80%/80g, and combined them

Without getting into coffee snobbery about Starbucks beans, the issue is probably that their dark roasts make really awful espresso. In fact, the dark roast I mentioned in my previous post that I couldn't get dialed in was a Starbucks dark roast. So I'm guessing the problem is less about the Pico not being great for dark roasts, and more that Starbucks dark roasts are terrible for espresso. I'd use the remainder of that Sumatra for either regular drip coffee, or a cold brew like the other anon mentioned. Obviously a specialty roaster is the best option for whole beans, but if that's not an option for one reason or another, Starbucks' Guatemala makes a decent espresso on the Pico. It's what I used when I first bought my espresso stuff, to learn how to dial in and control variables, before moving on to better beans.

>> No.19007415

So what the hell is the deal with 1ZPresso and Kingrinder? My understanding is/was, they're both clones of Comandante, and they're both owned by the same parent company and are the same product with different branding to be sold in different regions; 1ZP in NA and EUR, and Kingrinder in SEA. But right now in the States, I can (and indeed did) get a Kingrinder K4 for about half the price of the equivalent 1ZP grinder. If they are actually the same grinders with the same parts made by the same people, why would they undercut themselves with Kingrinder, when the entire point of 1ZP is to undercut the much more expensive grinders they're cloning? It seems like a really odd business decision to compete against yourself with an identical product sold at a lower price point.

You can also buy a couple refillable stainless capsules on ali and fill them with whatever you want.

Yeah I saw them on Amazon but I was wondering how efficient that would be, provided that pre grounded coffee from the roaster suits the capsule

They were previously selling the cheaper kingrinders as the 1zpresso rs and rk. Turns out they're so cheap that the south east Asian market really didn't want them, they wanted the more expensive 'flagships', so they split the brand and cheap Americans ate kingrinder right up after aggressive Amazon black Friday sales.
>they're both clones of Comandante
1zpresso broke into the hand grinder market with the JE and E grinders. JE was nearly an exact kinu clone, down to using real italmills. E was the first comandante clone using the original 38mm q2 burr.

I'm the guy with the max. I still need to do a side by side taste test for pourover because I don't think i can tell a difference between it and the ZP6 without having two brewed right next to each other. ZP6 is insanely good for $200

Makes sense. I figured the coffee was the problem, but I figured if I could even remotely get to dial in a shit roast, other ones would be a bit easier. I tried 53 and it still wasn't good, but it was at least properly extracted.
I did a medium at that same grind and it was under but in the ballpark.
Do you run a few grams though the grinder when changing grind levels or is that a meme? I have been but I honestly can't see a difference.

>> No.19008316

>>19008299
You can, but hand grinders have very low retention. I never bothered, but if it makes you feel better waste a couple beans.

Lindt enjoyer here
I guess if you eat lots of sugar you taste bitterness more. 70% tastes sweet to me since going low carb. 90% would taste bitter to me before but now is really enjoyable, like no bitterness.
If you dark roasts taste bitter to you, you might eat to much sugar was my take.

I don't hate bitterness. I hate predictability and loud, obnoxious personalities. I need layers. I need length. And I need pairing: more layers and more length. More surprises, lasting joy.

2 sips of an IPA and I'm out. Anything over 78% cacao and I'm bored. This >>19008299, >>19007097 and >>19005334 is complete garbage as well: simple, one-dimensional flavour profiles with little to no satisfaction. Aka how on earth did this become a meme, ever?

this shit tastes really good. not too sweet, creamy, and smooth.

Convince me to stop spending 100 yen every morning to instead buy hundreds of dollars of equipment to make my own coffee
