I've been to all sorts of social events connected to work. Management throws nice events for themselves, these are usually worth going to if just for the food, but socialization at these events isn't usually a chore. Conferences and stuff also tend to be reasonable affairs, plus it is nice if travel to a good place is included with it. I got lucky and it was restaurant week when I was on travel for class, shit was cash. Contractor stuff is also pretty nice, usually decent catering and nice meals post meetings. Though I have also been dragged to shit "iconic" places post work shift, but looking back I don't actually mind that, I experienced the local stuff and learned the truth about it.

I've also been to team events and potlucks. These are the "normie" events people complain about. Awkward environment, basic bitch food, and usually with people you are already sick of fucking talking to all the damn time. Last one had shit cardboard pizza, could not wait to GTFO from that one.

I've also been to Army parties. These can range from fun to "mandatory fun". I've got fond memories from these, largely because my time was so fucking shit these events stick out as bright spots of fun. Plus I've worked a few of these as a worker bee running stuff.

Bottom line: company events run the gamut from "this is a blast" to "holy fuck this sucks, let me leave, let me leave". It all depends on the corporate culture and who you are there with.

Also, OP committed a crime against that steak. Probably ruined it and made it into shoe leather.

The real treat is to do this shit during work hours, which is really when all this "social" shit should happen. Get paid to go to lunch, a bar, a bbq, etc. If your team is doing this shit after hours, they are cunts that need attitude adjustments.

The only stuff that should happen after hours is fancy dinners and shit with clients/contractors for schmoozing purposes.
