18916536 No.18916536 [Reply] [Original]

guys, i went to costco today and there were ZERO eggs there. are eggs the new toilet paper? jeez. anyways, i'm glad i raise my own hens. these bad girls give me 6 eggs every morning to eat. i have to drink them raw to finish them (discard the whites though, raw whites are bad for you). i recommend you buy some chicks and have eggs for the next 8 years, as long as a hawk doesn't come and take one of them. RIP Ziggy!

Either that story's horseshit or things have changed with chicken breeds and their feed over 90 years. Chicken coups would only really smell if you never cleaned the damn thing at all. The smell's otherwise negligible and your neighbor wouldn't hardly notice unless they're nosy HOA types.

Or $1.60 cheaper in quantity.
Either way, you're exaggerating.
Makes me wonder how certain you are it's cheaper to raise them, especially if you value your time at even minimum wage.

But everybody here is overlooking the real fly in the ointment.
I f you raise your own eggs, you're committing to paying (at least a little) for them each and every week.
I can skip eggs for a week, and often do.
In fact, it's a rare week I go through an entire dozen.
No matter how little the per egg cost, OP is committed to 3 1/2 dozen eggs per week. That's about 5 times as many eggs as my GF and I eat.
Even if you ignore the value of your own labor, even if the other costs are just $1/dozen (50¢ a day), it's still cheaper to go to the grocery store, not per egg, but per week.

>I enjoy it like a hobby
And there's your the real answer.
My hobby is woodworking, but I'm not going to pretend it's cheaper than buying furniture and stuff.
I too have had to give away tons of shit, because I spend the money on my hobby like a drunk sailor that just hit port, not because my hobby is a good financial decision on its own.
Happy you like being a chicken farmer, but for the vast majority of Americans and Euro's, it's a waste of time and money. Plus most of us just can't practically do it. Zoning regulations, neighbors, local laws, etc, etc.
