18911200 No.18911200 [Reply] [Original]

Just went to Costco and bought this. It's a Nordicware Nonstick High-Sided Oven Crisp Baking Tray.

I wanted to buy something with a rack so I could bake chicken, fish sticks and other meats elevated on the grill so the bottom wouldn't be soggy.

Just found out that it is only oven safe to 400 degrees. Wtf? That means no broiler I guess too.

What the fuck is the point of this then and is there a pan I can bake and broil stuff on with a nice elevated rack? Thank you,

>> No.18911229

Yeah non-stick coating starts releasing its cancer chemicals above 400 degrees.

Just bake shit at 350 and youll be fine

Didn't your oven come with a broiler pan? I like the nordicware bare aluminium pans but I don't think they make a rack that isn't non-stick.

>> No.18911253

I thought the gimmick of Nordic Ware was that it's raw aluminum with no cancerous chemicals.

people that buy nonstick stuff are like children, they're always like that. funny thing is stainless steel and carbon steel breaks their little brains even more so it's not even an option for supermarkets

I think non stick is a great idea but it's just not ready for prime time.

I use oil/fat and I never have a problem with literally anything sticking. Normals are so fucking lazy and retarded they'd rather invent a whole entire new material than take the time to learn how to cook.

what would you even need non stick pans for? I threw my last non stick pan in the garbage a few weeks ago. even "difficult" stuff like eggs tastes better when you make it in stainless/carbon/castiron

They are easier to clean and maintain and work well for low temperature cooking. There are even some non stick pans that can be baked up to 500 degrees.

You also don't need to use as much canola oil or butter.

Anon it's just an aluminum pan.
That being said, the nonstick ones are a meme, they still stick and you have to line them, but they are harder to clean not to harm the delicate non-stick coat.
I have a couple of their plain ones and just stick them in the diswasher.
>inb4 aluminum in dishwasher
Yeah it gets ugly, who cares, it's a oven tray.

If the instructions say it's not usable above 400 then it's mostly worthless. I just wanted a regular pan that had a elevated rack to make things crispier. I sometimes finish certain things under the broiler as well. I just hate soggy chicken and foods so I thought elevating it so air gets underneath it will help.

Return that shit. Costco's super liberal return policy is one of the main perks of membership. There are people who abuse it, but this doesn't sound like one of them and the staff don't care unless you're in there returning shit every week or one of those assholes trying to return TVs after the Superbowl, etc.

By the way, check the website, the rack in your "American-made" Nordicware pan came from China.
>Made In: US (pan) and China (Grid)
https://www.nordicware.com/products/nonstick-high-sided-oven-crisp-baking-tray/

>>18911229
The thing is, "non-stick" can mean more than one thing in 2023, and Nordicware doesn't explicitly mention Teflon anywhere on the package, you have to go to the website to find out: "PTFE coating is made without PFOA.", i.e. supposedly the new "safer" Teflon, but sorry, I still don't want it my kitchen. Stay mad Dupont.

>>18911289
>Costco usually has good stuff.
Food-wise, yeah (except for produce), but housewares are hit or miss, Nu-Costco sells a lot of shit, you need to research and be ready to use that return policy.

Sorry if I sound bitter but similar story here, I grabbed a Nordicware item on a whim (as you do at Costco) and didn't notice the details until seeing your post, so thanks for the heads-up. Why couldn't Costco have just sold the regular aluminum pans.

I'd expect costco to sell something more premium than a 10 dollar regular pan. Maybe a better material than aluminum or stainless I dunno. Maybe a bundle with something useful.

It really limits what you can do with a pan if you can't go above 400 or use broiler. Non stick has its place but not in this application.

What in the fuck are you constantly cooking at over 400? I cook every 2-3 days and this pan hasn't given me any problems, because I don't the "Clean" setting for cooking food. And if you're constantly broiling things then how do you not already have a cast iron pan/griddle to slap in there?

I’m pretty sure the rack is the limiting factor (and that temp is similar to oven safe nonstick pans), if it helps a Costco rep posted this as a response to a review complaining about the temp:
>The racks are oven safe up to 450F. They are labeled at a lower temperature due to some ovens not being calibrated properly and can be off by up to 50F.

I got two of these from Amazon just before Christmas.
They work great so far. I've used them for rubens, jalapeno poppers, a rib roast and meatballs.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TCBYZXC?psc=1
I had to shop around for size since my oven is only 22" wide on the inside and a standard "half sheet" is 13" wide, but two of these fill the oven nicely.
