I do love Aldi, the most superior grocery chain. I love its efficiency, its wide ever-rotating selection, and the opportunity to feel good by giving up a quarter to give a free cart to an elderly person. Whenever they have German week I fill my freezer with schnitzels and strudels. I wish there was a local grocery chain that was half as good, but they have all been bought up and ruined by out-of-state investors.

The use of child slave labor by a company, such as Aldi, would have significant negative implications. It would be a violation of human rights and would likely lead to public outrage and boycotts of the company's products. It would also damage the company's reputation and could lead to legal consequences. Additionally, it would perpetuate the cycle of poverty and exploitation for the children and their families. It is important for companies to conduct thorough investigations and audits to ensure that their supply chain is free from forced labor and other forms of exploitation.

I am not aware of any recent child slave labor allegations against Aldi that were made by Publix. It is important to note that these are serious allegations and should be supported by credible evidence. Without proper information and context, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on specific claims. In general, it is important for companies to have strict policies in place to ensure that their supply chains are free from forced labor and exploitation, and to conduct thorough investigations and audits to verify compliance with these policies. If a company is found to be using child slave labor, it would have significant negative implications for the company and for the individuals affected by the exploitation.

Customers fighting at the cash register
In an Aldi store in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
A scene that should never come to pass
But alas, it happens all too often, alas

The aisles are cluttered, the carts are full
Tempers flare, voices rise, the tension is dull
Over a box of cereal, a gallon of milk
The altercation starts, it's like watching a silk

Words are exchanged, insults are thrown
Shoppers look on, in shock and alone
The cashier tries to intervene
But the situation is far from serene

It's a sight that's all too familiar
A reflection of the society we mirror
Where material things hold more sway
Than common decency, or simple manners to convey

Let us strive for a better way
To shop and to live, day by day
Let us treat each other with respect
And remember that kindness, is the ultimate check.

Aldi!

In the late 80s they started doing frozen food and putting fake brand names on the food.
It was still the absolute shittiest stuff you could find though.

I know they got bought out, and overnight started selling booze and pretending to sell better products, but its all still generic, and its all actually more than Walmart prices (if you are being miserly)
In fact, their raw meat prices are abhorrent

There really isnt anything special about aldi, its not even cheap now. But it doesnt stop the dredges of society from shopping there.

This. Aldi is cheaper on a lot more, and buying in smaller quantities, in addition to ease of transportation and storage (presumably somewhat of an issue if low-cost shopping is at all a concern and not just a hobby) means much less potential spoilage

They undercut every other grocery on almost every product, with similar or even better quality on generic brands. On name brands that they occasionally stock, it's hit or miss whether Aldi can undercut another grocery when the latter has a sale. Aldi's limited time products can also be pretty special in terms of price and availability. Currently in the U.S. they have jarred sour cherries at a price that's at least 5x better per pound than anywhere else, if anywhere else even carries them (most places only carry sour cherries frozen or fresh when in season, and for jarred they only appear as specialty cocktail cherries at a huge markup, hence 5x).

At the moment however it seems in my area that Trader Joes (same company) has Aldi beat in egg prices, probably because Aldi has yet to figure out its supply chains for the cage-free eggs legally mandated in several states.

Funnily enough, all the Aldi near me are in very weird spots.
One is right next to a Bass Pro and a Lowes, with no other grocery stores in sight
Another is next to a dollar store and a movie theater, no other grocery stores in site.
The last one is in an Ace hardware store parking lot, next to a Walmart.

All the other competing grocery stores have little bubbles around the city where I can go into Shnucks, and Hyvee, and Diefbergs, and Town and Country etc etc right across from each other. They group up, just like gas stations build competition right across the street.

Aldi segregates themselves in poorer crappier parts of town where there is no competition. That alone speaks volumes

Aldi can get away with it because 1) they've been doing it forever, everywhere around the world; 2) their prices on all goods are so much lower than anyone else's; and importantly:

3) if it's your first time at Aldi and you were caught off-guard by the cart thing, that doesn't actually stop you from browsing and shopping if you want to. Compare Sam's or Costco, where they check membership at the door -- you cannot even browse if you are not a member, so the casual person who looks at a giant store where people are coming out with lots of groceries and thinks, "hey, let me check out the prices," would surely be offended more at the fact he *cannot* check out the prices. Yet somehow Costco not only survives but thrives. Being "in the know" about Aldi's different culture can actually be enticing to some people, without being exclusionary -- though maybe it would help their sales even more if they made it exclusionary.

Same in my state (MA), even though it allows groceries to sell alcohol in general, but with some limitations, namely that the alcohol must be sold in a separate section with its own cashier. It's probable that Aldi nationally wants to streamline the state-by-state logistics as much as possible, so it may have only two models; Aldi stocked with liquor and Aldi without. Hiring another staff member for a liquor section in MA, or doing separate logistics for beer but not wine in NY, might just have been not worth it on the books to them (especially given the mountain of other laws they'd have to deal with).

It's funny how a state like MA which has such a puritanical tradition of liquor laws also has so many liquor laws designed to protect the local liquor store culture against the big box and grocery chains. Yes, the local liquor store culture of winos coming in daily for the liter of E&J and pissing and passing out in the shopping or residential area across the street, or of repeated underage sales violations, or whatnot (I love local liquor stores for them holding rare finds and some great deals compared to, say, TW&M, which can't even ship between stores within the same state for some reason, but I'm just pointing out the bizarre sensibilities of these legislators.)

Their gin and vodka are their only decent branded spirits (the gin I'd say is of a similar profile to Gordon's, and the price is about the same, so you should probably just buy Gordon's), unless you like subpar whiskey and tequila. Several years ago there were several grocery chains in my city narrowed their aisles and encouraged unidirectional flow (obv to get more shelf space, since they're city grocers and usually can't expand outward). But I'm wondering if the open plan was coincidental with the pandemic since a lot of groceries went *strictly* unidirectional but *also* widened their aisles for the duration. If one state had a pandemic regulation which Aldi's layout violated, they might have chosen that moment to experiment with new layouts everywhere, but I dunno -- can't pin down dating info in a cursory search online.
