I don't care what anyone says. pre-ground coffee in a cheap drip coffee maker is the best way to drink it. I use a $10 coffee maker from wal-mart (it's two years old and I'm shocked it still works) and Folgers. That's all the excitement I need!

Finally got my electric hario kettle. Less than 60€ and no shipping cost, thanks krauts. Not a temp controlled one, but I've got a thermometer for that when I need it. Made in chinkland, guessing hario has a factory in japan for the local market but uses chinese ones for international one. It's got some rough edges but is mostly solid. It's filled with stickers that are going to be annoying to remove.
Took 5 minutes to boil a max filled (0.8L) tank of cold water. I'm probably going to be loading it up with half that amount most of the time.

As I'm trying to learn espresso making, I figured I'd start learning how to make milk drinks. I'm able to aerate milk using my French Press, but the amount of milk I need for myself is just slightly too low on the press. So my options are to use more milk than I need and continuously waste milk, or to buy some kind of frother. There are cloth and metal filters that are not disposable if you want to try that.
Personally I'd suggest cowboy coffee because you only need a pot and no other equipment.
My method:
>Boil water until it bubbles
>turn stove off and drop your grounds
>let them rest for 4 minutes
>Stir
>let them est for 6 minutes
>sprinkle some cold water from the tap so the grounds sink to the bottom
>serve straight from the pot to the cup
Very simple and very flavorful, any other method will filter out something but cowboy coffee is the most complete, it's only downside is that it's slow.
Moka pots, espresso machine and french presses also do not use anything disposable

also I just want to say that I've been brewing delicious cups with one of these cloth filters, bought it on a whim after running out of v60 paper filters. the water runs a bit too fast compared to paper but since the cone is longer and narrower the end result is about the same. plus it's reusable, ridiculously easy to wash, no need for additional ware since you can just hold it above the cup, and obviously really small and lightweight.
I started using the v60 because I like to bring it on bike rides, but this cloth filter is even more convenient, so I think I'll be switching permanently.

Picopresso anon here. I think I've dialed in as good an espresso as I'm going to get from a handleld, unpowered machine I got for less than $150. What I got was a very nice espresso. I've certainly had better espressos, but then again, I've often had much worse espressos at specialty coffee shops working with several thousand dollars worth of equipment. Obviously the next step is to try a better bean, and luckily, there's no shortage of specialty roasters around me. I think at this point, though, the hurdle is going to be brew temperature, which is just an inherent flaw not just with this machine, but with any manual machine that isn't powered. In fact, I feel like temperature would be an issue even with a more expensive manual machine like a Flair, simply because they tend to be made of machined aluminum, and I already know from being a PC gamer, that aluminum is a fantastic heatsink material, which makes it a terrible material for a water chamber that needs to remain at a certain temp.

So now comes the big, obvious question: can I get a decent espresso machine for under $300, ideally one with a PID, or at the very least, one that self heats the water chamber? Either a manual/piston/lever powered one, or an electric one. I've tried doing a search for "budget espresso machines," but they recommend things with pressurized baskets, like those cheap Mr. Coffee machines, and I want one that I can really dial in and make a real, proper espresso.

$350 ($299 on sale sometimes) gets you a Breville Bambino which is considered by most poorfags the best out of the box appliance level espresso device under $1000. Once you're ready to spend $1000 - $1500 of course there are much better options.

Gaggia Classic Pro has its many fans but you have to fuck with it and mod it (at significant cost) before you have all the features redditors obsess over, like PID. Its main advantage over the Breville is it uses industry standard 58mm stuff. Breville has its 54mm standard the company's married to.

>> No.18766459

I might wait a bit and try to snag a Bambino on sale. In all honesty, the results I got in the last few shots on the Pico have been good enough that I'm not actually in a terrible hurry to buy a new machine.
>>18766459
I don't mind chinkshit. Technically, both my espresso machine and grinder are chinkshit. Apparently AliExpress sells some decent coffee stuff if you're willing to dig around, but the problem with that route is that after shipping and import fees, you often end up paying as much as you did for the actual machine.

>> No.18766477

The nicest thing about the bambino is it's instant with their thermomeme system. There are dozens of pro systems out there you can spend $1500 on that you still have to wait 10 minutes before it's ready from turning it on. Loved that about the bambino when I had one. Press the button, three seconds it's ready, run a cycle to warm up the head and portafilter, then you go.

>> No.18766479

>>18766474
The issue with the chinkshit I'm talking about is that they're not even on aliexpress, you have to fuck around with agents to buy them.

Sounds like you're buying shit coffee.

How to Brew
Suggested ratio: 60–70g/litre
Grind size: Medium to medium-fine
Buying advice: The iconic cafetière is glass, and most of the presses available are glass bodied. However, for a couple of reasons I’d recommend stretching to a dual-walled, stainless-steel version if your budget allows. Primarily, I recommend these because they’re unbreakable and glass most definitely is not. More expensive glass options generally have better and stronger glass, but a stainless-steel version will last a lifetime. Secondly, for those with a concern about the loss in temperature with a longer brew time, like the one I recommend, a dual-walled, stainless-steel press will retain the heat much better than glass.

Some people do say they can taste something ‘off’ or metallic with stainless-steel brewers, but in blind testing I’ve never been able to detect any difference. However, it is possible some people have a particular sensitivity that I do not.

Maintenance: Soap and water should be used after every brew. If for any reason you start to get a brown patina building up on the brewer, then dissolve about 1 tablespoon (10g) of espresso-machine cleaner (I use Cafiza, but other brands also work well) per litre of very hot water and soak for a few hours before rinsing thoroughly.

just got my oxo kettle for a clean $100
if it doesn't drop dead suddenly I'll consider it a very good purchase. the temps are accurate according to my thermopop, it heats fast, the pour is good, it's got good weight distribution. the knob is a little sticky but that seems like it could be lessened by use. seems like people stopped talking about it because the EKG came out and I get the willingness to deal with the price difference, but on a budget and based on good experiences with a bunch of oxo stuff in my kitchen I'd be willing to roll the dice with oxo over xiancumj china rando at similar or lesser price points
only thing I could say for a con is that it's not insulated so the kettle itself gets hot to the touch but in practice that doesn't matter, and the handle is the same thick rubber oxo uses for all its other stuff so it's pleasant to hold
I like it especially at the pricepoint

Its worth getting an even cheaper one if you make coffee infrequently. I wouldn't be dropping $100 on a grinder if I planned on using it a few times a year. If you're using it daily and its going to last years, don't shoot yourself in the foot over a few bucks.

That's another thing to note when seeing people bitch in reviews. Some people have shitty water. Some people don't clean their shit. Its not just oxo, thats just how it works. Ideally you want a fairly steep angle to keep water from drying on that weld. Scale increases thermal resistance. That little weld gets hotter and hotter and water is eventually going to seep in and sit. Just keep it in mind and I'm sure you'll be fine.

obviously the price is absolutely imbecilic. i bought it for 200€ at the local lidl about a year or two ago. im completely satisfied with the espresso it makes, provided you take beans you like. cleanup aint bad, the tray is dishwasher safe and the brewing unit doesnt take much beyond washing off occasionally.
decalc depeneds on water quality and consists of an automated process where you mix cleaning liquid with water and let it do its thing for about 30min.
deep cleaning consists of throwing in a tab and starting a brew, then shutting it off for 30min mid brew. ive had to do it after maybe 5kg of beans.
if a pod machine doesnt need those procedures its most likely shit.

I don't know, the knobs, levers, and pipes are sort of the "holotype" of espresso machines. For being such an expensive, "premium" machine, the Decent looks cobbled together. The body looks like it's crammed into an electronics project box and then had a smart phone strapped to it. In fact, what it actually looks like is like the inventor did his prototype in a project box, then when the internals were finalized, he just machined a project box out of metal so as to not have to redesign anything.

Dunno if that's real or just in my head, but I'd be curious to hear from someone else.

>>18771368
Jeez, I don't know why that didn't occur to me organically... Thanks for the tip. I wonder if the diameter affects flavor, since you're changing the dynamics of it by using a narrower outlet, a coarser grind, and thicker puck. Would the same coffee taste different even after dialing in? I'll have to do some doodles and contemplate that.

Diameter, hole placement, basket taper, and dose(puck height for a given diameter) will all affect change the resistance of your puck, which will affect pressure/flow, which will affect taste.
